CDI vibration

Hi all,

Have had my clk270cdi for a few months now and I've noticed some vibration in the cabin and through the steering wheel from the engine, anyone with the 270 have this, I know it's a diesel so won't be as smooth as a petrol but is it normal?

Well the first thing to check would be engine mounts.
Put the gear lever in P with the engine running and shift to D and then reverse, and see if you can feel the vibration.
If its the transmission mount that has failed this is usually more noticeable at specific RPM
A torque converter that has glycol damage to the lock up clutch will also cause a vibration but only when pulling under load

Ok thanks will check, so I am right in thinking I shouldn't feel anything when the engine idle in a clk270?

Well nothing should be vibrating at idle no. It could be a dodgy injector if you feel it at idle! Does it vibrate in neutral as well?

Yes it does

Then an injector giving a misfire is the most obvious cause. It is best to get a diagnostic machine to confirm this but it sounds very much like your issue

Ok, could it not be the engine mounts if it happens in neutral? The only reason I'm thinking that more is because the car performs fine and idles perfectly, it's just the idle vibration being felt in the cabin..

The mounts are fluid filled and often leak and then sag when old. The 270 lump is heavy and they can go through mounts.

Thanks for the info, how much would i expect to spend to get them changed? I read I may aswell get transmission one done at the same time.

Engine mounts around £70plus vat each. Transmission mount £30 plus vat
Expect to pay a couple of hours labour

has anyone done this procedure themselves? is it hard, if anyone has a write up could they share :)

It's straight forward.

Have you got a decent jack and quality spanners?

Although a different engine, mine can be felt through the seat and steering wheel at tickover.

Mine was only 2 1/2 years old and under warranty when I bought it and though I asked two different dealers to give it a check over, neither found anything wrong, including mounts, injectors, timing chain etc.

Diesels just aren't petrols.

My case different engine 3.2 cdi
Was vibrating a lot under load, whole dash was shaking
Gear box oil solved the issue for me

I do have a decent jack and spanners, is there a guide available?

I was under the impression that even though it was a diesel being a merc I shouldn't feel anything in the cabin, it's not a huge vibration just a constant tick over one.

The top bolts are usually very tight btw.

15mm are the size of the top bolts. 13mm are the size of the bottom ones.

Undo them. Jack the engine up and take them out.

Do them one at a time to keep the alignment for fitting the new ones.

Hi All, I have exactly the same issue with my 2004 CLK 270 CDI.
Did changing the Engine mounts solve your vibrations?

Thanks in advance!
Mark
