After my last thread "Humming after engine off" it turns out many Mercs suffer from failure of the "Auxillary Water Pump" which is unknown to the owner.
It should continue to run electrically for a short time after the engine is turned off to circulate water throughout the cooling system thus keeping the engine from overheating through "Heat Sink".
We checked my mates ML270 and his had also failed. This method is used on many Mercs so I suggest you check.
