As above really....I have a 2010 E350 CDI Sport and it has the CI/pcmcia slot under the on/off button. It is any use for anything? I could look in the manual of course....but Im thinking about this at work....and why do that when I have you helpful lot at my disposal!!! 😄
I assume its old tech now....but I see you can buy an adapter to enable SD cards to be used in it. Is it worthwhile?

I've used it to transfer music files to the hard drive and to update the navigation maps.

Can you play media directly from it?.....say If I loaded it with music tracks.

you can play MP3 files straight off it, keep the file structures simple as you will navigate the folder structure via the head unit display. all track details should come up on screen when playing

+1 to all of the above.

The issue is that 15-20 years on, it makes more sense to just stream content from the iPhone in your pocket, via a Bluetooth adaptor connected to your Aux.
