Hi Guys,

Long time lurker here. Great knowledge.

Have had a great c63 w204 performance pack for nearly 5 years that has been excellent and whilst I love it, I feel I need something more sedate and grown up.

Like the luxury of a CL and would love to tick that v12 box but the right car has to come up for sale first.

Has anyone here got any experience with the v12 engine, be it in the S or SL as well as the CL? Or does anyone think I'm crazy for wanting to let go of one of the last greatest NA engines out there for this?

Many thanks!!

It isn't N/A it's bi-turbo. A 6L V12 Bi-Turbo.

I think the CL600 is the 6L V12 N/A?

Amgleo is referring to the 6.2 M156 engine in his C63 AMG as being normally aspirated, not the CL65 AMG.

The CL600 is also bi-turbo from around 2002/3 but prior to that there was a normally aspirated CL600 V12.

Welcome to MBClub.

I can understand the appeal of the CL65 AMG. I tried hard to find one (C216) a year or two ago, and went to see every car listed at the time, but they're few and far between and every car listed during that period was really rough which surprised me, I expected them to be better looked after. I'm sure nice ones come up, but you may be in for a long wait.

If you've not already, try an M157 V8 bi-turbo CL63 AMG, it's every bit as quick, but is more vocal as it goes about it's business. Being so torquey it's quite a lazy engine if you want it to be, but being a touch noiseier than the V12 you might night find it so sedate. Either way, give one a try, as there are more to choose from than the CL65 AMG.

Thanks for the reply.

Really originally wanted a CL63 before buying the C63 so after all years, I find myself still searching for one.

Never really considered the facelift M157. I suppose the torque from the bi turbo unit will suit the chassis but then again it's not the V12?!!

I'm surprised the ones you went to see were so uncared for. You would think that a car like this would be kept in tip top condition. Didn't expect them to be so rare either! Might have to be a case of stopping the next one I see and making him an offer haha.

Saw the one on auto trader with a lovely paint job and looks cared for but mileage probably a bit higher then I was after (44k).

Have you found yourself still lusting for the v12 or are you settled on the compromise of the M157?

I've been running a CL65 for a month or two now. I did try the CL63 then a Cl600 which got me thinking what must a CL65 be like. One test drive had me completely hooked, there is a review from the Evo magazine on line and I have to say it is spot on and is well worth a read.
I had certain reservations like coil packs etc but having signed up for the service plan run by MB I'm reasonably happy with the servicing costs.
I have owned a wide selection of fast cars in the past but there is just nothing like the silent wafter that the CL65 is. At the stab of the throttle regardless of your current speed it will project you like a missile in almost cartoon fashion with the scenery whizzing by you to ridiculous speeds.
My car was owned by a real enthusiast as he had a Quaife LSD fitted and a had it set up on a rolling road which produced 620 BHP.
There is no doubt about it the CL65 is a superb piece of kit and subtle to boot.

Had ours for a couple of months and its a great car. Strangely not many have come up for sale in the past couple of years but there have been a handful so far this year. I think I looked at the same cars Bobby Dazzler did and yes weirdly in pretty neglected condition. You only have a pool of 25ish in the Uk so pickings are slim anyway. The NA is more available but still relativelty rare. More available in europe but it can be a bit tricky buying overseas. Yes plenty of alternatives available but I really wanted one! Good luck with your search whether its a NA or the TT.

So he is, I re-read it.

If that's the case, why not the CL63? Same engine, but in a more "sedate and grown up" package.

It surprised me too. I've lost count of the number of weekends we spent driving around the country, and we eventually gave up looking before we found a nice one!

I really liked the V12, and I would love to own one at some point, but the V8 is my weapon of choice, so whilst the M157 might be a compromise for someone who prefers a V12 it's absolutely fine for me.

Whilst the M157 doesn't have the vocal range of the M156 you're used to, it sounds great for a forced induction V8, and when you catch the boost it's genuinely quick with a capital F.

There is a nice looking one for sale on e-bay at the moment. I like the outside colour but I would pay to have that wood removed regardless of how much it would cost.
