Clarkson calls Top Gear "childish"

I can see his dilemna, I thought the last series just went over the top and the sheer stupidity of driving in the deep south of the USA with the slogans they had on their cars takes some beating. I feel the previous series or three struck the right balance, but hey, what do I know, 8.6 million people can't be wrong......................or can they.

One of my mates won't watch Clarkson ever since he slightly panned the W211.

The childishness of the programme is what appeals to people and what makes it fun to watch. I wouldnt consider it to be a serious view on cars.

Even my mum watches it. All my mates watch it. Everyone that I know watches it because fundementaly its entertaining!

:D Great PR, but no one (apart from the citizens of Alabama) put a gun to Clarkson's head and made him perform in these programs? They were all simply entertainment and nothing to do with serious motoring journalism. Did Clarkson or his cronies object to the lunacy? Of course not, they revelled in it, and I enjoyed this lighthearted entertainment.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it too, wouldn't miss it in fact. I just think the Alabama thing in particular could so easily have ended in tragedy, it doesn't even take recent news to know there are enough nuts with guns in the US who are willing to use them.

I just wonder how they can keep new series up to that level. Will they need to keep bettering what they did in the previous series or risk losing viewers, or worse, bits of themselves? The fact that they were very nearly shot at, and the Hamster nearly lost his life in the rocket car shows there's not far to go.

Black C55 has taken the words right out of my mouth ...

I agree wholeheartedly ....

It's meant to be childish , thats what makes it fun ....

ditto :p :D

Or maybe you're all just children? :D

Some of it is entertaining - but it should be about cars and not playing conkers with caravans - there are a million other programmes for 'entertainment' but very few that were decent motoring programmes.

I agree, there's plenty of childish TV anyway, but no real programmes about cars.
I don't watch the programme anymore, but I saw the Alabama thing on youtube (since it became a news item). I thought it was stupid, predictable, and disrespectful of other cultures. They could have got a similar reaction in some of our communities: just find some slogans that would cause offence, drive in, and get the expected reaction. Cheap, lazy TV, in my opinion.

Unfortunately TV caters to the masses. I never criticise what people like or dislike as it tends to say more about me. Rumour has it that some people even watch East Enders or Coronation Street.

Programs live or die by audience ratings.

Not all TV caters for the masses John - and at some point you have to come off of the fence!

I don't watch Eastenders, Coronation Street or Emmerdale so maybe that proves something too! :D

How can you say that Stats ....

Only last night I was sitting with you round at your place watching American Idol .... oh how you cheered !!

I think it fair to say that prime time TV on the main terrestrial channels tries to, and from what I read programs live and die by audience numbers?

I enjoy watching the BBC Parliament channel and Al Jazeera, but I also watch Top Gear, am I childish? Oh and I don't watch these idol type things?? (whatever they are) Each to their own and I long for a good old fashioned, sensible, car review program.

John

I've got to say that I really cant stand Clarkson. He is the archetypal Little Englader and as such is a complete ****.

Edit: The the censor deleted my word, it is an anagram of rase.

using the words "culture" and "Alabama" in the same sentence (ok the next sentence but you know what I mean) - there's a first for everything :D

I can't stand Clarkson either, but May & Hammond are quite good.

I think Clarkson has run out of steam and reading between the lines of what I have read the producers must have told him so. So now he is trying to reinvent TG by scamming ideas off the people he wants to 'contribute' to his blog.

I am not cynical honest!

Maybe Top Gear is not a programme to be taken seriously? It does provide real info about cars etc whilst also having a light hearted view and a laugh. I love it, I even love Clarkson, his witty remarks are great.

My friends and family watch it too, and some are not remotely interested in cars and bhp and all that but they like to watch it. They must be doing something right!

Maybe Top Gear shouldn't be slated for not taking cars seriously, there is obviously a gap in the market then for someone!
I for one, think I would get a bit lost and information 'in one ear, out the other' if the whole programme was sheer seriousness and facts.

I like it, will be sad to see it go....
