Looks like an off roader..... check out the tread on the rear tyre in picture 3

It might just have had new shocks and they haven't bedded in yet ?

But i agree , looks nice , but photos very rarely show the imperfections and niggles on a car, Andy_K looked at a w124 estate that was described as mint and looked so in the piccys, but when he went to see it , it was a hound....

Did they do a 2.6 on an E reg ?

Grille is hideous , apologies again to anyone who owns one of these appalling grilles ;)

I bet they'd just put those wheels back on after cleaning them and the suspension hasn't settled.

I'd say that one was certainly worth a look but the grille is horrible

Andy

Sitting way too high... but rest looks ok from pic

Saw a cleanish looking 190E 2.5 on a J plate on the road last week that had an after market "Cosworth" badge added onto the botolid and looked awful and let rest of the car down.

There's 3 things that put me right off that car ...

1. The seller can't spell - for example - "I'll meat you somewhere" ...

2. People who describe stuff on ebay in a multi-coloured 200pt font.

3. And finally (for me) - there's no passion behind the description

All of the above drive me around the bend

The grille - ugly (IMHO) but easily fixed
Suspension - too high - possibly not settled in yet - but after 1100 miles I would have expected it to be lower then that. But easily fixed (assuming no other problems).

One side question - would the car have originally come shod with 16s? He's got 15s on it.

Waaaaay too high, as is the silly starting price.

I bought a mint 190 2.6 for £500 on a K with proper AMG wheels and factory fitted body kit with FSH - and on a K.

190s are pretty poor IMHO - one of the worst cars they've ever produced. Build quality of mine wasn't in the same ball park as any of my old 123s and 126s. Saying that - new ones aren't either.

What planet are you on???????

The W201 along with the W124 where/are the best built cars Mercedes ever made quality wise. My dads old W123 was a complete rot box that fell to bits within 7 years of him owning the car!!!!! It might of been a "Friday afternoon car" but even Europa(the Sheffield dealer at the time)said it was the worst car they had ever come across for rust!!! And it had lots of other problems like electric windows failing, central locking failing, wheel bearings failing, ect, ect!!¬!!!!!!!! He tells me that this car put him off mercs forever and he has been driving Volvo's and VW's ever since without the headache that the merc gave him.

I have tried to switch him back to mercs but he's followed how Merc have gone on in the last ten years and states, "why would i want to return to the bad old days when my volvo and VW estate's(yes he has both!!!!!)dont break down and all the electrics work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having said that, he did drive my merc the outher week and said it was the nicest, smoothest car he has ever driven :)

W126 was one the best solid built cars by MB right down to the very last details i.e. way the doors would clunk when closed.

The W201 is one of the BEST cars they've produced in the last 20+ years. Ask any MB franchised Service Manager. FP you are the first person I've EVER heard make a stement like that.

This car's been on ebay at least two other times in the last year. The owner & I got into a discussion when, in one of his ads, he claimed it was basically a Cosworth with a 2.6 engine.

I dont like the cheap/tacky tick tock sound that the indicators make on the W201 when the indicator stalk is activated...

Have I upset a few 190 owners???:D

They're not built as well, and in my opinion and look crap. I've owned, well, loads of old mercs including 3 190s and the 190 weren't in the same league as 123/126 for build quality, neither were the 124s I had. Rust isn't really anything to do with biuld quality - a well preserved 123 will be rock solid,as is my 1979 280CE.

They were just as reliable but not built as well in terms of solidness. Very flimsy feeling when compared to the 126, in particular. I think that once you've had a 126 you are spoilt.

Maybe I'm simply not a fan of the 201...........;)

Sorry, i think i'm misunderstanding here, i can't comment on the W201 being shoddily built as i have never driven one .....

But isn't current worldwide opinion that the w124 is the most over engineered and well-built car that Mercedes have ever created ?

What issues did you have with your w124 ?

Pops had a w123 280te and only replaced it with a w124 300te atfer discovering just how much better the w124 was , until he drove it you would have had to prise the keys for the 280te from his cold dead fingers before he would have ever changed it.

i second that Howard, the w201's,w124's and w126's are real quality cars especially during the 80's and 90's when mercedes were really exclusive and at the height of their era. also the w201 and w124 have alot in common as they share with regards to build quality, mechanically and components. I had the chance to drive a 190e 2.6 sportsline when i was at uni, this is going back 7 yrs ago but i was well impressed with the drive and the solid fluent feel of the car even in comparison to the 1990 735i my friend lent me a few days before.

Indeed a bargain, but not at all indicative of the real world pricing.

Like the others here I'd strongly disagree with the generalisation, however you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

:o

Thanks;)

The 201 other than the cosworths just give me the same feeling as e30 316 and 318s and shout "budget car".

Loads sold so they must have had some appeal, buy saying that loads of people bought ladas LOL - not that I'm comparing the 2.

I currently have a c36, z3 and 306 and I will say that the mint w201 I owned was the best car I have ever owned. The build was impeccable and the drive and feel was lovely, although 2.0 190e certainly lacked the c36 umphff

I cannot say I have driven a decent w124/6, I did drive an old girl 300e but it was not mint and felt it.

But I cannot accept some of the comments above.

I particularly love the tailend of the 190e and always have a warm feeling when I see one on the road  . Merc have not since made a nicer looking tailend IMHO. Never that fussed over the frontend (I like the new SL55 :D ) but it always looked class and had presence.

I like the w201 and think that that model was the best that merc have produced. So there! :bannana:

I thought it was just me?? Wasn't the suspension also discussed?
