Tonight on my old C 220 the rear indicator bulb stopped working and the clicker inside was flashing fast as they do although the indicators are flashing normal speed.

Strange thing was I could see a reflection of it working. Got out to look and it flashes the reversing lights instead to back it up.

It said using backup on the display.

Same with the front fog's on my C55 (S203) if a headlamp pop's the fog lamp on that side lights up on half effect , the fog lamps have two elements.

Damn clever these Krauts. Apparently the brake lights on my W204 flash rapidly under heavy braking. I have wondered if a following driver became so mesmerised by the flashing that they forgot to brake too!

My ALFA 159 did that......and my 209 before it.
On the subject of which....I got a brake light out warning when I had that 209....but both brake lights were on. Only after investigating did I realise that all the bulbs were twin filament (5 and 21w) bulbs so when one goes it just chooses other ones to use....and more cleverly keeps the pattern symmetrical side to side so it looks right. Only having found and replaced a blown bulb did I realise that it has four brake light when they all worked. When I see them with the wrong parts of lens lit up now or not enough bulbs lit on I often wonder if the owner is wondering why there is a dash warning when both side lights or tail lights are working. But yes its a good idea....but far from new....my 209 was a 2002 model.

A lot of cars do that including my Mondeo and insignia before that!

Doesn't also initiate emergency flashing once stopped?
Till you move off again.
Different things happen when brought to a standstill from different speeds.

Manuals say so for the 639 and even the 2009 211 anyways.

I don’t know. I’ve only had to brake heavily once in this car - about 11 years ago when someone pulled out in front of me on the German autobahn while I was overtaking at around 150mph! Fortunately I didn’t need to stop just then.

Maybe another Rover innovation? - had it on my last-century-designed Rover 75. (ie pre BMW)

Other possible BL/Rover firsts: Folding rear seats in a saloon, bonded windscreen, wipers sitting below the level of the bonnet (all Montego)? The Mini’s engine/gearbox layout, Triumph’s PI?

I await flak/contradiction, but to balance the above…

On the occasion it's happened, because I'm at the front the motor could be lifting its skirt and flashing its backside for all I know.
It is true I get horny though.

About the flickers brake lights under heavy braking, good idea but it's on almost all cars now

My car, a brand new car in 2016 my first car that had auto brakes and so type of assisted brake ie if the car felt you'd not braked
hard enough to stop in time it takes over. So during the first few weeks of ownership and I drove the car to work and back getting used to it and
also using my old c class as I got used to my new gle driving in narrow roads in London -
on a sunny afternoon going back to the office the car in front suddenly braked as a cycle rider pulled out from a side road in front of the car - I was behind it and did what I always did in my previous cars brake but pull up very close to the car in the front do car behind does not crash into the rear of my car - as I out into practice my tried and tested safe braking, the car took over, the seat belt pulled me in and the car stopped suddenly - thankfully the car behind managed to stop in time. The cars never repeated this type of scenario again but I always pull up close to the car in front during emergency braking in the hope I'm not rear-ended. I also keep a good distance but others behind me get frustrated but that is their problem
