CLK 220 CDI
Yesterday my car just switched itself off while in stand still and in D. It didn't turn over after 2 attempts, I had to take the key out and restart it. It then did it again but while I was driving at about 40mph! I let it roll, switched the ignition off and on and it started instantly but while it was still rolling.

Any idea what this could be? Engine is 220cdi.

Thanks.

I don't think it's the crank position sensor as it won't crabk when iturn the key, just does nothing other than the dashlights

You will need to get you ECU codes read to understand the issue

A fueling restriction, such as a blocking fuel filter, can drop the common rail pressure below the minimum required pressure...and it cuts out.
The codes will confirm this, as said. Then the skill to interpret them!

Is this done via a normal diagnostic or just STAR?

If it doesn't crank...could be a broken earth.

Anything else this could be?

Is there somewhere I can find who's got a STAR machine near me?

I hope not, that will be a nightmare to find!
Not really. Tou can prove it by putting a jump lead between the engine and a good body connection (or the battery negative).
Once proven, then it might hard to find the original, but you could connect up an earth cable between engine and body until you have more time to diagnose.

How far are you from Nunneaton (mercland)
