My recently purchased CLK came with malfunction warnings for rear lights.
The left light unit was full of water and mould.
The bulb holder was corroded and multiplug broken with a seperate earth screwed to circuit board.
I removed the light unit and gasket looked ok with no cracks, but also noted debris in boot gutters which I cleaned out.
I found a used light unit, holder and plug on Ebay for £25 inc delivery.
I tried to clean out mould with dish soap and agitating. Got most out but there is one section which if difficult to reach and left a dark patch.
On close examination the foam gasket was misaligned.
I removed and used super glue to hold in a few spots and clear silicon in areas where foam heavily in dented.
I mananged to removed connectors from plug with a terminal removal tool as need two thin strips pushed down either side to withdraw.
I refitted old lamp unit and removed inner trip panel to dry out as still wet in lower well.
There was a problem with number plate bulbs as well and used contact cleaner and dialectric grease and replace all the rear bulbs with Lucas ones.
I still have the used light unit as backup as straight forward to remove and refit but needs a bit of care to locate and get past bumper.
Seems OK now
