Had my CLS five weeks now and the Airmatic system has started to play up. Today I noticed a warning symbol showing an arrow pointing upwards in the middle of the car and the message about going to the workshop. I've not had a chance to look up the symbol, but I presume it to be the Airmatic. It's now in the workshop, do you think that the system is covered by warranty? Has anyone had similar problems?

Hi and welcome,

I wouldn't worry to much as you have had the car only 5 weeks so it's the dealers responsibility to fix the problem.

Out of interest ( I have airmatic to ) what year / mileage has your car done?

Good luck

Michael

Hi Michael, it's a 2005 with 50000. I purchased from a dealer in Watford, had a problem with the motorcycle battery and parking sensor after one week. The dealer paid for the battery but said that the sensor was not covered under the warranty. He gave a contribution towards it, I paid the rest. I'm concerned that this problem will also not be covered. I don't expect to buy a car and have all these problems. The car looks great and I have already changed the front grill and had the wheels repainted in black chrome. It does look stunning.

Is that from a MB dealer or an independent? If MB, the warranty should cover an airmatic problem. But if its outside the MB network I wouldn't hold my breath if there is a fault. Airmatic faults do tend to be expensive fixes unless its a simple leak from one of the valves.
Is the car in a MB workshop? If not, airmatic is quite a complex system that really needs expert attention.
You do have a couple of good MB independent workshops near to Watford so all is not lost.
W Gates in Harrow and Andy @Eurocharged, Watford can both diagnose and repair your car.
Both can be found on Google unless you need a link?

Purchased from an Independent dealer. It's now in a specialist who have had similar problems with SL's. Purchased from Watford but live near Southampton.

You have MBS on your doorstep then should your specialist get stuck.Always take my E55 there for servicing or work.
I was there a month ago for a service and an SL was in for both front struts replaced with reconditioned ones.

Sounds very nice and disappointing that your having these issues after just one week. Airmatic really needs specialist attention, hopefully it's something minor like an air leak.

If the dealer is quibbling about a parking sensor I wouldn't hold my breath on them paying for Airmatic faults although surely the car isn't fit for purpose I would argue.

SL'S don't use airmatic as far as I'm aware it's I different system called ABC. I'm sure if the indy your using can fault find on these, airmatic shouldn't be a problem for them.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Picked it up tonight, they looked at the fault code which suggested what it could be, they fully checked everything and it all seems good. Hopefully the car was having a funny five minutes and it won't happen again. I've always had great service from Peter Nash specialist cars and always extremely reasonable. I went to MBS today who are doing a stage 1 on my car next week. It seems they also have a great reputation.

That's good news if they couldn't find anything, time will tell I guess.

what is a stage 1?

Not sure if it's their own terminology, but they are removing the insides of the resonator and replacing with a straight pipe inside. This will make it louder on acceleration. I could have had a stage 2 but I think that my wife wouldn't enjoy driving it as it's very loud. I just want it a little louder so I get that V8 sound. People seem split on the idea, but I'm looking forward to it.

If that's what floats your boat :thumb: you could do a 80's style cherrybomb con;)
