Came back from library to Suffolk market square and next to my chosen wheels (a 1.6 litre VW Golf belonging to my currently antipodean daughter if you ask) was a CLS 63 AMG displaying a Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea resident's parking permit on the windscreen. So Royalty, obviously. In Obsidian Black. My favourite colour. An omen.

Thing is, to spec it up so the show matches the go costs around £14,500. That's on top of its £73,365 OTR sticker price (including just £67 for 80 litres of special Mercedes petrol and a gloriously missed mark-up opportunity).

Thing is, I don't have £87,865 pounds to spend on a car (unless I break up granny and her dancing partner for spares and sell them on ebay). So I shall have to wait. Damn.

So, for How Long? How long do I have to wait? When will this car become affordable?

I've got about £12.50 in loose change littering my car ashtrays and this computer must be worth something. I can always try selling the house, becoming homeless and living in the car. People do this don't they?

But then there's depreciation.

So the Porsche option? Buy the right one and sell for, well OK, less, but not that much less...

It's very confusing.

Andrew, you have impeccable taste ...

Did I go too far?

Granny is safe, the cows have gone shopping, Bo-peep has joined the Navy. Everything's fine :)

Thats a mighty fine looking animal you got there ....

Please form an orderly queue! No pushing at the back there!!:)

Just our rural sense of humour, constable.

Actually, we call her Cyril...

Sean, do you still run the same car as when we met? How's it going?
Btw I'm well pleased with the Eagle F1's I fitted.

Stats007, don't AMG's depreciate like D-list celebs? Say, by 60% from basic list price in three years. So it'll fetch £30K in three years, maybe?

yes, still have the CLK55 .. still love it and simply cannot see any replacement for it at the price it would fetch today. It does eat rear tyres though. I might fit F1's next time.

The cheaper AMGs do (CLK55, E55) - the supercharged luxury cars (which I'm putting the 63s in with) tend to offer 50% residual over 3 years. Try finding an SL55 AMG for £30k - not going to happen - £50k at least for a good one and they're coming up to 5 years old.

But the CLS is just an E-Class in drag. Maybe it will hold up better than the E63 AMG - but they're in the same class.

SL's are a law to themselves and offer better depreciation than anything except a 911. Big engined S-types drop like a stone so 50% is probably about right for the AMG version after three years.

Regarding AMG depreciation... (apologies for the digression)...

I recently enquired about a temporary used car from MB Direct - they had a 2003 E55 AMG retailing at £29,995, with 40k miles ... having looked into the car and finance options etc - MB themselves values that actual car, in 24mths time with max 60k on clock to be worth £9,600.

So basically a 5.5yrs old E55 AMG (W211) originally costing £65k+ will be worth less than £10k according to MB themselves...

Naturally, I passed on that, as it was only needed until Nov 07 when the replacement is due for delivery.

We had Cyril round for lunch today. Everybody wanted a piece of her...
