Hi guys

My cls getting random stuck in 4th gear only very occasionally and when I switch the car off and on again it fixes it . Any ideas ?

I had the same thing with my S210 although it was second gear. Various attempts to cure it were unsuccessful but as it only happened every 3 months or so I was not bothered and kept the car 10 years. Switching off and re-starting always cleared it.

I had similar problems on my W203, I was told it was most likely in need of a new electroplate (or something).

As Mercator says it only happened one every 3 months so I ran the car for 5 years like it.

What year/mileage is the car?

Possible electro-plate on the way out.

Get the codes read

My car had this issue just before I purchased it August this year, Mercedes Oxford diagnosed and replaced the gearbox control unit with fluid change £850. My car is a CLS 06.

Almost certainly the electro-hydraulic plate.

Also check connector plug on gearbox because oil creeps up wiring to control box under carpet on left hand side replace plug and clean control box pins with brake clean or contact clean and allow to dry .plug is about £15 from mercedes

Wow guys , thanks so much . Full service history. Oil gearbox change every 10000 miles . Lastly , I've extended warranty , will that be covered

If it's an MB warranty then almost certainly covered. If it's a third party warranty then it all depends on the level of cover purchased.

Don't have the gearbox serviced untill you get the car checked with the star or another code reader because if the electric plate on the valve body needs replaced then the oil should be changed at this point anyway just make sure that they replace the oil filter if they are doing this repair cheers

Thanks so much for advice. And yes, it's full Mercedes dealer warranty

should be covered under warranty then just check with them 1st as i have a full mercedes dealer warranty & they wont cover the rear heated screen as i just found out on Thursday last week & they charged me £113 to tell me what i already knew
