CLS55 and other AMG buying advice - car on Autotrader

I see there's no mention of the front wheel bearings being done and who in there right mind puts 2 different tyre sizes on the same axle and exspects it to pass an MOT
All was revealed on visiting! It was the spare tyre that was a different size but fitted due to a puncture...

Yeah I love them. I have an AT search set up for them and often have a look at what's out there. If I ever get something with that engine it'll be CLS-shaped.
I love it. Thiugh I'm also slightly worried something ruinously expensive is going to happen... Weirdly driving it reminds me of my mates old series iii xj6, in that it is huge outside and snug inside. The brakes makes a few moaning noises, the seats seem to have an air pump that randomly triggers and the tyre pressure warning light is on, but apart from that it's great. And the effortless speed, omg, I don't think I'll ever need another car 🤤

Check the front discs, could be heavily corroded on the inside face due to sticking calipers (corrosion between the stainless guide plates and the alloy caliper body causing the brake pads to stick)

The seats may be dynamic, the air pump should inflate the bolsters for support when cornering.

TPMS could be as simple as tyre pressures needing setting and storing or a faulty sensor or something else. You can get that looked at or code it out if you’re not bothered by it.

Ahhh yes, amazingly lucky I went on NBClub forum to ask for buying advice just as you've found one newly listed on auto trader, thank you 🙏 I'd been looking for weeks. I also literally bought a stop cap 318i 2 days before 🤦 Oh well.

The car has had new front discs and pads. The only downside is it has zero service history. But I think the odds of it never having had a service are slim. Mainly i bought it because the seller seemed genuine and seemed honest. Obviously I'll get the engine in gearbox done ASAP. And get it jet washed within an inch of its life and wax oiled.

I've heard Hydrate80 is good for stopping rust... Any ideas if that's good for arches? Then touch up?

Spark plugs are what I’d be swapping quick smart. They don’t like coming out out they’ve been sat comfy too much more than the 4 year schedule.

The CLS was supposedly inspired by the XJ.

Put some pics up when you get a chance.

Once I get it cleaned up I'll post some proper pictures. Once again thank you to all who advised me 👍

That's interesting. It really does have that feel almost as if jaguar designed it themselves...

Excellent - looks like it's got a sunroof?
Yeah it does. I definitely wanted heated seats after having a Merc with non fitted, leather in winter is very very cold. (Who would spend 50-100k on a car and not tick the 300 quid heated seat option?! ☺️). I wanted a sunroof, but it wasn't a key criteria and I would have bought it without one. No one seems to be bothered about sunroofs now, but I'm in '80s kid and even ford escorts had sunroofs because sunroofs are cool *👍

*Or very uncool, when they rust, or leak, or refuse to close again 🤦😅

FWIW, I’m fairly sure that heated seats were standard in the AMGs, can’t say for certain on the 219 ‘55 but certainly on the 211 :thumb:

I remember forum member Mike had a nice S211 500 with no heated seats, likewise another member with an older R129 500 - nice spec car with adaptive damping etc and no heated seats - madness! :)

One of the reasons IMHO that AMGs are such good value is that they come with a generous standard specification and are often well optioned too

Before I bought my current S212, the last car I bought without a sunroof was an Alfasud in 1988. It broke a run of 29 years. Luckily, my wife's Fiat 500 has one as did her Clio before that. I just love the light they give.

"Sunroof" is in the keyword searches for every car that can have one. That or "pano".

I can't understand why someone wouldn't have one, given the choice. Anyway, we're all different.

I like a sunroof but not everyone does and that’s not always about the cost.

My 911 had sunroof delete as a factory option! :)

Sometimes it’s about weight, sometimes about headroom, otherwise reliability and what have you. At the end of the day if you don’t use them/like them I can understand not ticking it as a cost option, but I’d rather have it.

Pano roof is a nice feature on a large car for a bit of extra light, makes it feel more spacious.

Nice to have for me, but not an absolute deal breaker :thumb:

I love a sunroof too. I drive with the sunroof, panoramic roof, or convertible roof on very close to every journey regardless of duration, speed of weather. Biblical rain at very low speeds is the only thing that will prompt me to close the roof!

I’ve got to be honest, but I often forget to use the sunroof. It’s nice for extra light although I often find myself closing the blind on the pano roof for some additional shade on the cabin especially if it’s going to be parked up on a hot/sunny day.

Also useful to cool down the cabin quickly on a hot day when you first get in, but soon end up back using the air conditioning after a few minutes.

I think in the last convertible I had, I used to drop the roof when it was above about 10c, although with heated seats and airscarf it’s probably less of an issue.

It’s a classic British phenomenon, the cabriolet/convertible - we buy more of them here than most European countries IIRC and it’s usually raining, too cold or too hot! :D

But then cars that make sense are seldom interesting or fun :)

I spent the first three years with my 212 reaching up to pull the sunblind back before remembering I didn't actually have a sunroof any more. It wasn't quite a dealbreaker for me as at least the car came with ivory leather and white headlining. And, of course, the 5.5 up front.

Had it had the Sport interior with black leather, black dash, black door cards, black carpet and black headlining I think I'd have had to walk. I had a 212 loaner like that and it was like sitting in a very dark cave. I like light.

But, yes, I do get the arguments about weight, complexity, headroom etc

I only open mine at very low speeds or to let some heat out on a sunny day when it's been parked.

I'm a windows-closed-AC-on type person. I like a quiet and cool cabin.

Yeah, MikeInWimbledon reminded me that I'm not a convertible sort of bloke. I like being enclosed and I like a bit of crash structure round me - preferably with a bit of glass overhead.

I drove out to the Chilterns last weekend with my wife and realised the only point at which I'd actually drop the roof on a convertible was the final mile into the village.

I know loads of people love them and that's fine but it's tin tops all the way for me.
