Hi all hope everyone is well.

So I get this loud clunking noise when shifting from park to reverse. Only happens from park to reverse and only happens when car is parked on an incline. Any solution?

Mercedes c class 2011 se cdi blue efficiency facelift 7g tronic plus gearbox
Thank you

Do you have your foot firmly on the brake pedal?
Have you checked the atf level?
When was the transmission last serviced?

Yes I have foot firmly on brake pedal. I haven't checked atf level nor have any record of it being previously serviced

Hi folks, mind if I put a few thoughts forward? Indeed the 'parking pawl' is a pin that locks the gears from turning. A lot of people rely on this to hold the car when parked on a hill BUT it was not intended to withstand the weight of the car and can sometimes break. The correct procedure (on a hill) is to hold it with the foot brake then put on the parking brake, move shifter to neutral then release foot brake (to take up movement on parking brake assembly) & then move shifter to park.
Car immobilised & no strain on parking pawl/pin. OK to just use Park if on the flat.
A 'thump' when engaging gear could possibly be the rubber couplings in the prop shaft if they have hardened over the years. Replacement of these may fix the problem - but not a cheap or easy fix (they cost approx £40 - £50 each) and quite a lot of underside dismantling is required to get them off/replace them.
I am going to replace these on mine as part of the rear subframe & suspension arms renewal project I'm currently on.

Thanks for your informative response. Mind if I advise you, I had the subframe issue and took it to the dealership, they replaced it FOC as it's a manufacturing defect

Hi there akiiraja - The only problem is - I'm halfway through the replacement process already (Old corroded subframe off, replacement half built to go on) & BlackC55 (Mercedes dealer) informed me that if you don't have a FULL corrosion check history in the service book, Mercedes won't entertain it at all.
I think the subframe issue should have been a Recall item but imagine how much that would cost the benevolent (tongue in cheek) Mercedes that we know & love.........
I'll post up some words & pics when I'm done.

Aww so sorry, but I didn't have any corrosion check history. Unfortunately you've been lied to. Should have tried a different dealership. I also only had part service history but dealership didn't even check that
