Cars going back in on Tuesday after both NSF control arms were replaced and tracking was sorted as its doing the following...

Straightening the wheel after a quick (40-45 mph) sharp turn (coming off a large roundabout) theres a clunk. Dosent happen at any other time, only after quick sharp lefts.

Though its going back in on Tuesday just wondered if anyone had any ideas what it might be?

Sudden noise after a sharp turn is usually a result of weight transfer precipitating movement where there should be none. The fact it happened after suspension work would indicate that its probably suspension/wheel /steering related. You might be able to replicate it by jacking the car up and vigorously wobbling/shaking each wheel off the ground in turn but cornering involves enormous forces which may be difficult to emulate in this way so not a foolproof test by any means.

Wheel bolts tight....jacked the car up at the front... theres play when i hold the wheel in the 12 and 6 position replicating the clunk ... no play anywhere else (like holding 3 and 9 etc)

Does the car have springs? If they pulled off the controls arms and did not seat the springs back properly when put everything back together, it may clunk like that even though everything looks good.

Upper and lower ball joints will make that noise too. To test, jack the car enough slide a crow bar under the tire and use it to pry up and down on the wheel. If the ball joints are loose, you'll hear the clunk.

I'm not familiar with the CLS but with most MB's the upper control arm and ball joint assembly are all together. The lower ball joint is separate from the control and may have been moved over. Check both sides.

Before I take it back up to the garage, just for information to avoid getting fobbed off, other that a loose bolt , can the control arms be put on 'wrong' or is it pretty obvious for a half decent mechanic?

Its standard suspension not airmatic
