So I had the car booked in for the clutch and DMF to be done, this was quoted at around £1,500. Upon removal of the clutch the garage noticed that the shaft had excessive play, so the gear box was sent off for diagnostics, this turned it to be the bearings. This work cost around £1,020.

Total cost was around £2,520.

This was a massive shock as I had no noise, clunking or grinding, the car drove perfectly. The car has done 174k

I use the car daily and have owned the car since 2019 from 105k miles.

I think at 174K miles some wear in the bearings is pretty inevitable. they don't last forever. I would imagine the bearing was noisy but Mercs sound proofing masked it well.

Yeah you’re right, was just £1,000 more than I expected to pay lol. I’m going to have the timing chain looked at next for piece of mind. The car has always been serviced on time, every time too.

Also, I had the gearbox oil done not so long back too.

Sounds like your car is in good hands. An extra £1000 is a lot when your not expecting it.
On the OM651 engine you will hear a clack clack clack on cold start (sometimes sounds like a light tapping noise) if the chain is worn. Mine wore out very early on at around 90K and the start noise was quite loud (not heard from inside the car). Pretty sure the over use of the stop start and short journeys cause mine to wear out.

I think I paid around £700 for new chain and tensioner, but that was a few years ago. But am hoping to run mine to 200k miles if I can, with good maintenance I think it should be fine.

That’s the next job on my to do list, all my miles are motorway miles, and I never use the stop start feature due to wanting to save the starter motor also.

But yeah, I love this car, it’s elegant, spacious, beautiful to drive and also a head turner. So I’m trying to look after her :D
