Code Scanners

I'm looking for a scanner that covers both engine and auto Transmission for my T Reg SLK230

I got the car last Nov and I seem to have had endless problems with it

Loss of power - MAF replaced
No Supercharger - K40 repaired
Not shifting correctly - Shift Solenoid replaced (apparently):dk:
I've replaced the trans fluid and filter myself
boot not opening
Numerous CEL usually when on motorways

Now I'm back to both not shifting correctly and... even though the superchargers working it doesn't feel like it's got any guts I always feel like there should be more when I drive it (it feels like a 1.6 with a supercharger)

So I'm in the market for a code reader upto £200 that will cover both trans and engine. There are cheap code readers on the ebay that claim to do both but I don't believe it at the money they are asking for them.

My main problem at the moment is the shifting it won't go into 4th until about 50mph and also there is a delay when kicking down rev's like a slipping clutch then decides to go... if a new shift solenoid is required where are these located on the car?

Any help would be appreciated.

I can't advise you on a scanner as I have access to a Snap On Solus but I would imagine you'll need a 38 pin to 16 pin adapter as well. I bought a cheap one from Ebay that did nothing before getting a 2nd hand Snap on one which works fine. The cheap one has only 3 wires in it to connect 38 pins to 16, I couldn't see how it ever would be ok.

Take it to someone with MB Star who knows what they are looking at :)

You can buy what code reader you like it wont mean much if you are unable to diagnose correctly.

I never use generic code readers on MB's the codes can be false/incorrect/non existent.

+1 on the MB star.
As said before they do not get all the info from the car.
My car was showing no faults on a code reader but when I put it on star there was rather a lot of things showing up that were easily rectified in star.

Was it a Bosch maf as your symptoms sound very like the maf is shot! Have you checked there is no oil on the maf? If there is it needs breather system on right hand side of engine when looking at the front cleaning and unblocking and also intercooler and pipes cleaning! That's if your maf has oil on of course. Star is the way forward with someone who knows what there doing. Had pretty much the same problem as your having but star first if no oil.

As a side note I have got myself a Star clone and its not the easiest thing to setup software wise.

I havent started to use it in anger yet as there is nothing wrong with the car and I don't want to break the car playing with it.

Unless you have quite a lot of spare time I wouldnt recommend getting one.
