Have got my new car ( to me anyway - 2004 e320 cdi , lovely car ) has comand with dvd capability. have saved to a dvd some music in mp3 format but when inserted it displays " DVD ERROR ". obviously not mp3 compatible.

have done a search it seems firmware update is possible - is this correct ?

How do i find out what firmware is currently ?

If i only need the cd / dvd for 10 mins anyone ( essex or London ) have one i could borrow ( no point in wasteing £17 :D )

pics to follow btw

Not an expert but dont think mp3s saved to dvd will ever work - usually have to be saved to a cd on a cd stacker unit that is mp3 compatitble

Nope - I have an 04 E220 and it happily plays MP3 files from a DVD in the comand drive slot.

Your dealer should be able to check which firmware you have and do the upgrade quite simply - or someone on hear may be able to point you in the direction of an update disc.

I endorse everything Mr E has said. Is the COMAND a factory fitted feature, or is it a retro fit?

Step 1
Ensure the COMAND has had all the relevant updates, specifically the Mp3 playing capability.

Step 2
After DEFINITELY confirming your COMAND is capable of playing these files, get back to us and we will do our best to get you up and running. Just make sure you do not put the DVD in the Map only DVD player.

Good luck,
John

Might be worth checking the format of the DVD.
I have no problems with MP3's on DVD+/-RW but it spits out DVD+R disks with the 'DVD Error' message. Not sure if it really can't cope with the +R format or if it is something i'm doing, but if you have a +/-RW disk and the ability to write to it it might be worth a test.

Check if MP3 is activated on COMAND by going into the Backdoor submenu on the ENGINEERING MODE Menu.

Here’s how you can call up these menus:

ENGINEERING MODE Menu:
Press and hold [mute] + [end] + [serv] for about 8 seconds, or until the "Engineering Menu" appears.

Once on the ENGINEERING MODE Menu press and hold [#],
[*], [left arrow] (in that order), until you see these three italicized options on the right side of the COMAND.

The new menu items are:
• Dr.Dist – Driver Distraction
• RegCod – Region Code
• Backd…- Backdoor

If you then press the Backd softkey you will get into the Backdoor menu, which gives you the Enable/disable MP3 feature.

If you find that it is already enabled try using a different brand of DVD. On my unit (W211 COMAND APS Model BE6061) I use Sony and Verbatim and they both play seamlessly in either DVD+R/RW or DVD-R/RW formats.
On other brands DVD+R/RW always plays better than DVD-R/RW (DVD-R/RW tends to skip quite often). Some other low end brands don’t even play at all.

Hope this helps.

I think your missing a far more important point?

If your car has not had this Service Bulletin applied then how many others has it missed? (It was a 2004 upgrade) Folks tend to think that the Mp3 upgrade was just that. But with due respect it was just another upgrade bought out by Mercedes-Benz for the COMAND which included the excellent upgrade.

Your local dealer should be able to tell you what upgrades the car has had, and what are outstanding. They have all been introduced to correct, or improve the car so in my opinion it might be a false economy to not get this checked out. You have bought a very nice car that needs to be looked after.

The software and "burn" speed also effects the compatibility. It works for me with Nero 7 and the slowest speed.

mp3 rules ok!!

tks to all , especially migabc , checked and system said mp3 option installed. so in keeping with other advise , no point in asking for it if you dont take it , I originally used a Panasonic DVD so tried a different make , this time phillips - both dvd +rw by the way and lo and behold phillips dvd plays - now have 4.7Gbz of audio on one disc.
Next step find a 8gb disc that works then try DVD shrink - could end up with more music than i know what to do with:bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :D :D :D
