I did not need a PIN code to update via USB after downloading from the Mercedes Me site, presumably because I am still in warranty or is it because it can also be done OTA?

I got carried away and downloaded all the maps for Europe, although like you I avoided Russia and the old Soviet republics. Possibly that is why it took so long to download!
