I have a 2005 E 320cdi with command sat-nav dvd in boot system. I have got the latest 2017 dvd installed which has been working fine for about 1 yr. However the last time I used it I got no maps etc just a spinning circle and the message navigation activated please wait.Nothing happened. I removed the disc and cleaned it and replaced it, same thing. I also tried the old disc with the same results. My thoughts then went to the disc player, this is too much for me to tackle so I left it. The following day I tried it and it worked perfectly again and has continued to work fine all week. So is it possible that the player could have some dust inside that is occasionally interfering with the disc reading laser, if so any suggestions on cleaning it?.

You could try one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000BN6KQY/?tag=amazon0e9db-21

But of course the issue could be with the actual optical drive, or the wiring/connectors etc.
Thank you for your suggestion markjay it is certainly worth a try, as the fault is intermittant and after I just cleaned the disc on Saturday it has worked fine. I have ordered the lense cleaning kit you recommended so am hoping for the best.

Is your DVD an original genuine DVD, or a copied disk. (i.e where did you get it from and was it about £30 or a lot more)
Cheers
Richard

Hi Richard I bought my DVD from a company called Comand on line and yes as far as I can see it is a genuine merc dvd. I paid around £170 for it and I have spoke to them since and they were very helpful, suggesting it was a problem with the lens which may need cleaning. As I said above I have sent for a cleaning disc but the system appears to be working fine again so I will have to see what happens.

Both my cls55 and sl350 do exactly the same thing occasionaly. If i lock the car then remove and replace the disc while car is locked it returns to normal when I restart the car. Only happens once every 3 or. 4 months. Also returning the screen to audio after using satnav seems to help. I will try the optical cleaner too.

Thanks for that info Gbrowncls55 I am glad to see I am not alone with this problem. I have also read somewhere that you can use a dust puffer as used on cameras, all worth a try I suppose. I am still waiting for delivery of my lens cleaner.

Hi Gbrowncls55 regarding your comment above (re returning the screen to audio) I was using sat nav on Sunday and had an unscheduled stop on the way home at a garden centre which was a bit off route. I just turned off ignition. When returning the sat nav just went back to spinning again so I just turned it off and carried on. Later I had another stop and when setting off again I just tried sat nav and all was working again. I had come to the same conclusion as you that if I switched back to audio even when stopping part way through it might be better to manually turn it off I will try this next time. I have now received my optical cleaner and run it through today so keeping fingers crossed. I will update when I have tried it again.

frankbs - apologies for not replying. Disk definitely genuine (See my signature) - so laser is most likely candidate here. And it seems in your case cleaning it solves it (I hope!) rather than having to get a new laser or nav drive. Its my (untested) opinion that diesel cars more likely to suffer from this - especially where they spend time idling with the engine on.

On the W221 S class with HK, the amplifier has a fan on it, and that draws air through it - which brings the air in from the vents that vent into the bumper (to help you shut the doors on the car), but in the case of diesels thats full of carbon particles and causes the amp to fail.

I have now used my satnav on several occasions since using the cleaning disc, and also always turned off the satnav when at my destination. Up to know it has performed perfectly so either the cleaning or the manually turning off seems to have solved the problem I hope.We shall see.
