Coolant! Visit Workshop

Hello there!

Sorry for starting my first post with a shout for help instead of greeting you all but I'm in need of some advises. I've got the notification "Coolant, Visit Workshop" (see pic attached) appearing on my dashboard and I would like to know if you could kindly advise on what could be the problem.
Just to elaborate on the situation. after observing for a while the temperature variation, i come to the fact that while I'm freely driving, the temperature goes down gradually even to the point where the malfunction disappears. Then the temperature goes up again when stuck in traffic. Any Ideas on what could be the problem ?? And if possible how much can I expect to spend for the repair.

Thank you very much in advance for your replies.

I think the first thing to do would be to check the level of the coolant under the bonnet when it has cooled down and look for any apparant leaks and top up with the correct antifreeze.

Regards

@Markedes... Thank you for your reply. Inddeed checking the coolant was the first thing i've done but things looks normal on that side. The tank is still full.

Then next step to check thermostat or fan as DM has mentionioned

Regards

with me knowing very little at this, do you believe these are things i can easily do or manage by myself. i know with good explanation i can be able to fix certain things but if there are high risk of breaking something else i will probably think twice :-) .. what do you reckon ?

If as you imply, you have very limited knowledge of mechanics, it would be advisable to take it into a garage and get them to check it. Find a good local Merc indy.
If you tell us where you are located, maybe someone can recommend one.

Is the radiator cooling fan operating when you get the fault warning?

thanks @grumpyoldgit . I've seen somewhrere in the forum about what should be a loud noise (something similar to a plane turbine noise ... certainly not as loud) when the radiator cooling fan operate but i do not hear such things so far and the temperature keeps on going up.
I live in South Norwood, south east London. so if someone knows a good garage where i could take the car tomorrow, I would be very thankful.

The cooling fan shouldn't be that audible, the best way to check it would be to take a look when you get the warning pop up, but keep your hand away from it.

As I don't know that area or any recommened mb independent garages in your area I hope someone who knows will be along to advise you.

I've googled it and found the following, which I think is fairly close to you, but don't know anything about them or their reputation. James Leigh - Independent Mercedes-Benz Repair Specialists
