Cruse control problems

Hello, something strange has started to hapen when i put my cruse control on, it drives ok for about 5 miles then for no apparent reason it loses speed then pickes up again, someone has told me this can happen when going up and down hills, however it started to play up on a trip to holland, definatly not hill country! im driveing a w126 300se. all idears welcome.
