Just been to MB MK 'cos my S211 tells me it needs a D service soon. Get there and they tell me that's been discontinued and it's either A or B plus filters, oil etc as needed. Anyway, to cut to the chase, ball park figure they quoted was around £600!!! Gulp!

Trouble is the cost of the additional items distorts things. Did they tell you the price of the underlying A or B service?

Yes, A = £199 and B = £299 plus..... And guess what, the old D is the new B apparently!

So I think it's over to Indies as it's now out of warranty!

My experience over the last couple of years is that as well - take the quote and double it. If you're unlucky it will be a few hundred over the doubled number. If you're lucky it will be a few pence under...

Try an Indie!!
Absolutely!

I think there's one near Harpenden that's meant to be good, or I could take a drive down to Portsmouth... :)

Using an indie my basic servicing is seldom over £200, and even with discs and pads it's not more than 400. MB branded parts (with boxes and invoice from dealer!), and if there's an offer Merc oils too.

Yes, same, I just had mine serviced, booked it in, told the car needed an E service but said, it's an A service. Looks like it was fixed price, it was done for £249 all in, and that included the windscreen wipers. Also had the front pads repalced for £160.

They also informed me the rear pads were 70% worn, and told me the discs had a lip on them, and they quoted me £300 all in.

what's a C service then? (mine is due in approx 2,000 miles)

I read somewhere that the letter on a w211 is the number of "workshop units" of labour required - A is 30 mins, B is one hour etc. Can't remember where I saw that.

Mine often says "D" or "E" after servicing for the next service and then changes its mind back to "B" or "C"....

The Assyst+ A, B, C, D is a heap of nonsense that just indicates how long a service is likely to take.

MB use A and B service sheets. Which have *nothing* to do with the Assyst+ A and B.

So likely as not a D will be a B service plus some stuff. However it could in principle also be an A plus a whole load of stuff.

It's a badly thought out mess. Go figure.:wallbash:

Indeed, which is why I prefer to go to one dealer for all my servicing, so they can look back and see what needs replacing and what doesn't.

You really think the dealers will do any better than MB?

The A/B service sheets basically say what should be done based on mileage.

As long as the mechanic does what they're supposed to and is dilligent about the checks then it should be OK. In reality I cynically suspect there's a % of stuff ignored, skipped, and misunderstood regardless of where you go.

Thats not bad, had a B service and new tail light fitted + MOT. Stiffed £527 @ indie. Gonna try another one, there is a place (cue Dryce) in Ibrox that comes recommended as does merparts in Port Glasgow.

Dryce - how has TJ O'Neil being treating you, would ideally go there as GF stays a stones throw from Carntyne and know the area sort of well and handy for work when staying there.

I've found them fine. My wife has been in twice with minor problems and they've been very straightforward for her to deal with.

But if you check the MB Specialists in Glasgow thread there has been a complaint.
