had a funny conversation with MB dealer about my upcoming service today.

My car is showing that it will soon need a "D" service. I called up local dealer, who said " Yes sir, there are only A and B services, the other letters that come up just mean that addional work on top of the A or B is required. so your car needs a major service (B) and some additional filter" they checked their system and said that last year it had a minor service, thats why is now needs a major service this time. OK, I said.

I checked my service paperwork and I had a screen dump from my suppling dealer showing that it had a major service last year. So i called them. "Your car had so much addional work done last year sir, even though it was only A service, your next service only needs to be a minor service" I said to him, that I was told the last service was a Major service by the salesman when I bought it in sep 2010, and that I had therefore been mis sold the car. (I asked the question about servicing when I bought it, as I didnt want to be hit by a huge service bill when I had to get it serviced for the 1st time myself.

Then he says to me, hold on sir, your car is 2005 so it actually only needs a service every 15k miles or 2 years. So you just need to go to the dealer and get them to do a free health check and reset the service indicator.

Good, I thought.. that will save me 400 quid. Then I checked the service history and the car has been serviced every year at/ below 10k addional miles from the previous mileage.

I am now quite confused, I hope the point comes across from what I have written here. Basically I want to know if the car needs to be serviced every two years/18k miles, or have I been told some porkies?:dk:

Thanks

Steve

Your car being 2005 will be on so called variable servicing with Assyst+ showing a letter A through H that indicates the expected number of hours work.

The MB service sheets state A or B which is different from Assyst+ and just means major or minor.

Your car will normally request a service between 9300 and maybe about 15000 to 16000 miles or up to 2 years depending on what oil it thinks it was serviced with, the way it's been driven, and how it feels like it.

Later cars (2006 and later) were on fixed servicing - 15000 miles or 2 years - whichever comes first.

My 2005 320cdi (I assume the 642 engine) will go no further than 15k miles. Its good practice to service at every 10k miles anyway. I'd take it in.

Hi mate, i have same car but sport and same age, Service D came up on my indicator recently, took her in to see Specialist: Howard Williams (Moseley Road, Birmingham)

Clearly just told me it was a small service, as my major service was done previously as per service book and my conversation with MB Gatwick, where it was last serviced.

The guy is chatting out his jaxy, ignore him and take it to a good local specialist.

1. You have not been talking to an MB dealer. You have been talking to an MB dealer Service Advisor... mine wasn't clued-in at all on what's going on.

2. Have you tried:

Mercedes-Benz ESS

3. Take it to a specialist. I left the MB service network and went to Olly (Black55) near Portsmouth, well worth the drive.

Thanks everyone, I ended up taking it in to the local MB dealer and explaning what I had been told. They quoted me £245 for a B service.I booked it in as its not a lot of money for a Major service. They told me to drive it more and harder if I wanted the service interval to increase. lol

Cheers.
Steve.
