Damage After Service to This…

I wouldnt drive it like that. If too much PS leaks, you will loose your power steering and it will cause damage to the ps pump.
I'm afraid I agree.
Too risky of further expensive damage and possible danger.
In my younger days, I had two very bad experiences with these in-and-out service depots.
On both occasions, the guy doing the work clearly was lacking in the skills to do the job.
Clueless !

^ Potentially, yes.

If it is time critical to use the vehicle then cant you effect some sort of repair , regardless of aesthetics ?

It will need replaced ASAP but there are many adhesives / silicones / epoxies that would keep it sealed until a replacement is fitted.

If it were me i'd clean and rough up the plastic around the hole making sure nothing dropped in the reservoir. Then smear some Araldite rapid on a small square of kitchen towel and place over the hole. Ive done similar before for emergency bodges and it works surprisingly well - a bit like using fibreglass. You can always add another layer of Araldite once the patch has set.

What ChrisHGTV said ^^^ block the hole with any one of the many products available out there , order a new expansion tank and use the car.

If you are going to peruse a claim from those who did the damage doing the above would harm your case against them . Tricky.

Afternoon all,

Rang the garage and there was zero resistance from them to put right their f*ck up.
I’m taking the car into them tomorrow morning to see if it’s something they can do that day if not it’ll be next week and I’ll bodge the hole til then

Local Merc dealer have quoted £25 for a 1 litre bottle of “345” PS fluid… they were supposed to get back to me with a price for the expansion tank but never did.
Someone mentioned a paper towel over the hole in my existing PS tank with Araldite but how would paper towel work exactly?!

Put a piece of paper towel over the hole and epoxy over it and onto the surrounding plastic of the tank , the paper towel will prevent any of the epoxy falling into the tank whilst it is drying and getting around the PS system.

Wow ok. Not sure I’m brave enough to trust a piece of paper to do that lol.
Would a sliver of plastic be better? Cut out of a plastic bottle for example

The epoxy (or whatever you choose) should be thick enough to stop it falling through the small hole , the paper (or whatever you choose) is just belt and braces incase it makes a break for freedom before it hardens.

Just remember to degrease and key the plastic around the hole to give the resin a chance to adhere to the area properly.

This. I’ve found it works well by pasting the Araldite or other epoxy onto the paper towel first so you can get it nicely saturated on a flat surface, then apply the patch to the hole.

Yes and I would use one of the 5 minute epoxies so less time for it to sag/run

Cheers guys! I’ve bought some Araldite which I’ll collect on way into work tomorrow then apply when I finish work in prep for our journey Thurs morning!

Just taken car into the in and out centre for them to see. They’ve spotted a hose that clips onto the side of the PS expansion tank loose and not attached to the water pump (see pic) and I think they’re now wondering if the damage was caused when we had water pump replaced (start of March by another garage).
Could this be the case? Does the oil filter cap need to be unscrewed to replace water pump? And is that loose hose vital to the WP?

Cheers!

Or did they spot the loose hose ??? Maybe they are trying to deflect blame ?
When they serviced a car they would have checked the power steering fluid level and changed the oil filter . Are the garage saying that the “mechanic “ did not spot the REALLY obvious damage when he completed the service ?
If they are saying that , maybe attend the garage on your day off in a clown suit to greet and explain the situation to other customers .
