Dashcam, which one ?

I've just ordered two (one for each car) G1W models from Amazon (eprance name).

Read here he does good reviews and advice:

Techmoan - Techmoan

I might even get one for the rear window of each car too, as we have cigarette lighter sockets in the boot.

I will buy some CCTV stickers too.

Daily my wife is nearly rammed off the road on the school run.

Like a large number of new cars, my new car has full-colour forward facing and rear-facing cameras built in for lane and speed limit recognition and for reversing. Why can't manufacturers offer an option of a built-in "dash cam" function?

The data feeds are all there already. I would happily pay several hundred ££ for the option just for the convenience of not having to have cameras retro-fitted.

I've had BlackVue dashcams for over three years, but my next one won't be one of theirs ...

I now quite like the idea of a cam recording basic info from OBDII - turn signals, throttle position, brakes, gear in addition to standard date/time/speed. Not many dashcams are capable of doing this yet, but if I were to buy one today, it'll be this one: BlackSys CL-100B, even though I do not like its form factor / size / screen, and would preferred a similar shape to BlackVue 400 - 500 range.

I like the look of this too but what puts me off is the number of cables going into the unit.
Power
Rear camera
OBD11
GPS

Where are these available to purchase?
Thanks.

I use the mini 0803 as I wanted a small camera but with great quality video. Its very cheap and works perfectly with a good picture day or night. With a 32gb micro sd card you get about 5 hours of recording before it loops on 1080p setting. The standard playback software is junk so its worth downloading other.

Biggest selling point for me was its size as you can tuck it behind your rear view mirror and forget it's there and it doesn't attract unwanted attention.

The techmoan video review is very detailed if you have 20 mins or so to spare.

Mini 0803

Totally agree! +1

Mini 0803 is ace, as is the 0805. Avoid the forthcoming 0806 until the spring - there are always issues that the factory have to sort out with these cams.... so don't be an 'early adopter'.

You might want to re-think the rear view camera as it does not give a very good view out of the rear of the car. It's more for mini car drivers who want to record their passengers INSIDE the car. Again, Techmoan points this out.

I'm about to install a rear facing camera, but it will be a second camera dedicated to the job, and positioned (the important bit) at the rear of the car, not at the front. This way it will catch stuff happening on the road behind me, not the back seats!

Cheers,
Robert

Well, the power will come from OBDII, if connected, so that's one less cable in. Agree about the others though - rather cumbersome.

If not for a built-in touchscreen, I'd be tempted to take it apart and fit inside the rear view mirror housing ... might still be possible, just have to think of an elegant display solution, perhaps leave it as a plug-in unit - it's not like I need to set it up every day: haven't changed settings for my BlackVue in over a year now.

Not aware of any UK supplier, but there are some on eBay, direct from Korea:

Precisely!

I've got a Mini-0801 as a rear cam, and it's great. Not many dashcams can be squeezed between the window and the sunblind :bannana:

It is also facing significantly lower down, than the front one, so almost no sky in the frame and (unfortunately) bent horizon, but excellent details and great coverage right up to the rear bumper. Seeing tailgater's face once they see the cam, is priceless :thumb:

I had not thought of CCTV stickers! Good idea :thumb:

What do folk think about 'advertising' you have CCTV?

I have a discrete front facing camera in both my cars and have told my wife that if she ever has an accident or altercation to not switch the ignition off, but get out of the car and stand in front of the bonnet to discuss the issue with the other driver.

That way we get (silent) movie of everything, and if she (or I) are pushed by an angry driver, the 'assault' is on video.

So NOT advertising CCTV has its advantages.

On the other hand cyclists are quick to point out that they are filming you, to prevent any nonsense (admittedly their cams are usually on their helmets so they can stand /face anywhere and capture the footage).

To advertise or not?

Cheers,
Robert

Well thanks to the good advice on this thread, I've ordered a Mini-0805 as a starter. I'm still interested in the Blacksys CL-10B with a view to moving the 0805 to the van for daily use. One less cable on the Blacksys might just swing it. Thanks. :thumb:
