When I switched my PC on yesterday I noticed a noisy fan however it did quiten after a while but last night my PC died and is still dead. There is power going to the PC as the card reader power light is lit.

Has something fried?

I must get a laptop, this EEE is too small

I had a noisy fan about 4 weeks ago on my PC, I just opened the case rested the CPU fan, cleaned it as it had SO much dust etc... now works a treat, so quite as well!

Open the case and see what's going on, could be something really simple!

If it's the CPU fan that stopped, the I would have expected the PC to crash when the CPU temp became too hot. But if you left it for 5 mins to cool down you 'should' be able to restart it again. But without a CPU it will crash again quickly. If you do this too many times the CPU will eventually die. Maybe you had bad luck and the CPU died on the first over-heat?

If you're not able to reboot at all, even in to the BIOS, then I'd say the CPU has died.

Just my guess work. Best ask a friendly local to have a look for you if possible.

It could be that the rattle of the fan has somehow reverberated around the insde of the case and dislodged something like the graphics card or the CPU - open it up (make sure it's not still plugged in) and check everything in the PCI slots is seated correctly - this may involve removing them and putting them back in.

Beyond this get a local techie in... you'd be surprised how undead a PC can be...

Most modern pcs have protection so that the pc will not turn on if the cpu fan fails or is not connected. Take the side panel off and have a look to make sure it is secure and connected.

It could have been the power supply fan that had failed and subsequently took out the power supply. This needs testing first. A simple tester is available from Maplins.

I checked everything, pushed pulled and poked all connections, tested the PSU and all was fine. Got a mutimeter on the motherboard and bingo, it's kaput.

I suspect that it has been overheating due to the location under the desk so I nipped out and bought a new mini tower PC, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HD, Intel Celeron processor etc. Appears to be woking fine just need to download printer driver and source a sata hard drive enclosure so I can transfer data and have an external backup.
