Would appreciate advice on how to fit the detachable towbar to my 2000 M Class. It is an original Mercedes part. I cannot seem to get it to lock into place.

Thank you.

Hello,

Do you mean fit the whole thing or just locate the detachable bit in the socket under the removable flap?

I have a westfailer (spelt wrong I'm sure) removable towbar, the removable bit has a red key that you have to insert and turn the handle. This moves the teeth in, push the towbar up into the hole and release the handle this locks the teeth in. Turn key to lock and remove key.

Cheers

Hi

Just the detachable part. There is a handle to turn but it just wont "click" secure. I am probably doing something really stupid!!

If it's like the Westfalia one on on my Vito (and the 2002 VW I had before that) you have to pull out and turn the wheel on the side first. Then you simply insert the tow hitch into the socket on the vehicle, and it automatically locks into place. Is this not covered in your handbook?

There's an online Vito manual that covers this in detail (with pictures etc.) here:

http://www4.mercedes-benz.com/e/vans/vito/betriebsanleitung/vertiefen/N201AF.html#N2115C

(you have to scroll down a bit to get to the fitting & removing part)

Hello,

Is the key in it? the handle also pulls out as well as turns, so Pull it out as well.

Can you see the teeth opening at the top part? when you turn the handle?

I have the intructions in the boot but my cars at home :)

Standard fit works the same as Westfalia. Insert red key, pull and turn handle. There is a bit of a knack to it. I don't remove mine anymore, so I've lost the tack. :D

There are ball bearings at the top! Now I am more confused

£940!!!

I had mine fitted by a mobile fitter and bought the towbar seperatly with twin electrics and relay £300 :)

This may help (ignore vw badge...best I could find with a quick google?)

Yup that's the same towbar I have on my Vito (and had on my VW Sharan). Fitting and removal is covered in detail in the Vito handbook link I posted in #4 above.

I've had this model on my bmw convetible (completly hidden) and also on the current ML (again completly hidden)

The twin electrics on the BM dropped down on a swing bracket, on the ML they are hidden further under the car. I hate towbars on show :)

Yup my Sharan had a swing bracket for the 12N & 12S sockets ... and with the Vito there's a single 13-pin tucked away underneath.

Sorted

Thank you all for your advice - finally got it sorted! If you see a trailer on the side of the A55 tomorrow you know I got it wrong!!!!

Cheers

Jason
