OK perhaps supercars is over the top, but I would like to know, as a friend asked me, why they don't make the sportier cars, AMG, RS etc with rechipped diesel engines. OK, back a few years diesels were slow on acceleration, noisey, rattly things, but with the advancements, I am sure performance of a diesel is getting closer to petrol engines. I have noticed that you can now buy coupes in diesels which untill recently you could not, and VW make a Gold GTi with a 155bhp diesel engine. Are there any real or other reasons why no diesel "supercars"

I am sure there was a diesel AMG made at one time - something like a C30 (diesel) AMG?!?

I suppose really, diesels are good these days for general cars etc, but for ultimate performance, most manufacturers will go for a petrol.

Ie, if you want an economical (and often reasonably powerful!) car, buy a diesel. If you wan't a supercar, buy a petrol!

Just my thoughts!

Cheers,

Will

Hi Will,
They still produce the C30 AMG CDI, but unfortunately it is not imported.

Ahh - thought it must be something like that! I knew that there was an AMG diesel of some sort!

Thanks for the information. :)

Damn.. there arent many of those C30 AMG cars around, even checking a german site like www.mobile.de only shows five on sale, versus tons of other cars in the C-Class range past and present.
There something nice about something so rare, too bad they only come in LHDs

Lamborghini are experimeting with a diesel Gallardo that uses a 5.0Litre V10 VW engine, 309 bhp and 553lb ft of torque.
The biggest problem is the limited rev range.

E300 turbo diesel AMG ..... for sale in this months mercedes enthusiast...says its a factory order... ;) don;t know if the engines been AMG;D...

The E400 CDi must be quite a stormer.

Driven a ML400CDI, that went very weell, i can imagine the same engine in the e-class is gonna be pretty mental...to put it bluntly :) torque, torque and more torque...

In 1998 I read a review of a 400CDi transplanted into a W210 "mule". Apparently they couldn't give it full bore because it was on snow tyres but they couldn't get it to change into 5th gear without backing off the accelerator..at 130mph. :D :D

One of the technical managers at MG told me that supercar manufacturers don't fit diesels mainly because Porsche dont, when they do everyone will.

VW will probably be the first with the Lambo and Bugatti ranges.

They might have thought they were getting there already with the Phaeton W10. Sad, really.

One VW was designed with the diesel engine as the primary engine source. IIRC the codename was B10, I think this is what is now the Phaeton.

In 1970 mercedes made the C111, the mk3 was a 3 litre 5 cyl diesel which did over 200mph. Sadly just a prototype.

Since I am led to believe that the new Bentley Continental is largely built off the Phaeton platform, job done!
