Hi Guys,
I'm after a gearbox dipstick for the 722.6 engine.

I understand that you cannot buy them from local Stealership cos they are classed as offical workshop tools, and not available to the public?
Is that right?

And if so, is it ok to get one from eBay? They seem to vary in price from a three quid to about 15 quid.

Anyone tell me which to go for or what to say to Stealership to get one?

BTW, I have a STAR machine. Does anyone know if it's possible to measure gearbox oil level with STAR? There is an option to measure gearbox oil, but when I go into it, all it does is tell me the temp of the oil in each selected gear.

make a dipstick from a piece of curtain wire if you can wait till tomorow i will measure mine for you

Looks like the ones on ebay are just home made anyway so if you could give me measurements, that would be great thanks.

Ask the dealer, he should sell you one. I got one there. Its depend which dealer, but if you ask around all the dealers one should order it from you :)

Yes some dealers can be an absolute PITA and refuse to sell you any service tools whilst other just sell you them without issue.

If you use a piece of PVC covered curtain wire, the ATF should come up to 5.6-5.7cm up the wire with the engine running, it in park and the ATF @ circa 80 degrees.

I doubt the dipstick actually touches the bottom of the pan, a more accurate measure would be to measure from the top edge of the tube, so you just need the dimension from the point on the dipstick that sits on the top of the tube to the level marks.

This is something I should have checked last time I did the ATF changed, I should have look if the dipstick touch the bottom or get stopped before, while the pan was out...
Next time I try to remember this.

You don't need the sump off, push a length of curtain wire down till it stops and compare the length to the dipstick. ;)

Got one from main dealer in the end.

Did they give you the ol' "das beste oder nichts" or the " beaten out by the hands of ancient dwarfs in the caves of Moria" line before handing you the invoice? :p Still at least they sold you one.;)

They were ok about it actually.
I pushed my luck by asking for a discount. They said that they're not supposed to sell me one therefore can't take anything off the price. But that was the limit to their resistance. They didn't seem to have any problem at all in selling me one.
