Disappointed with E- Class diesel engine

I took the new model e-class Coupé 250 diesel for a test drive last week. Whilst the car looked the business I was absolutely stunned by the clattery agricultural engine! I couldn’t believe how noisy and unrefined it was. Even at tick over in traffic- clatter, clatter. When accelerating- it still clattered away. Then there’s the delay in the gearbox. I put my foot down to go and that very noticeable half second delay is still there. Absolutely no different to my wife’s 2014 E220 convertible! No incentive to change vehicles yet then!

Not sure if the V6 or now straight 6 is offered in the Coupé but, it’s the one you need. The 4 cylinder Diesel engines are an embarrassment to the brand.

Think ill be tempted to go petrol with my next merc. Ill miss the turbo i suppose .

I use millers ecomax with my derv .it seems to quieten down a derv engine. Give it a go for a few months and see.

I cannot comment on the engine but if you were driving the car in Eco gearbox mode there can be delays before it wakes up, sport mode is much better.

The 250 petrol engine isn’t particularly quiet either.

Is this an additive that is out in the fuel tank? I’ll try that.

I’ve never heard a 4 cylinder diesel that isn’t clattery!

Even the V8 CDI I had was “ticky” (although the TDV8 from JLR sounded awesome)

I don't believe this is a problem isolated to MB though. The Ingenium lump in the F-Pace I was loaned recently sounded like the sump was filled with nuts and bolts, and 4pot diesels are never the most sonorous of powerplants.

The 2.0tdi lump in my Golf MK6 is actually more refined than the Merc and BMW 4 cylinder equivalent. Jags are just sh!t overall in my humble opinion.
Now, I sat in a 5 cylinder diesel Alfa a few times and it sounded brilliant.

I'm more than happy with the 250 in my C class , and the 9 gtronic box. 207bhp , 500nm of torque and does 0-60 in 6.7 seconds reasonably quietly.

The diesel boxer in my Forester is the noisiest oil burner i have ever heard , on the go it is acceptable but pulling away it is embarrassing.

Makes the Merc diesel sound like a Tesla.

If its new then the 4 cylinder diesel is called the 220 and will have this new aluminium block engine the OM654. Many of these new engines major on reducing internal frictional losses to improve efficiency- this may result in increased internal running clearances and couple this with a light aluminium alloy block to reduce weight may result in noisier , if somewhat more economical, engines??

Mine too, not sure what the OP drove, but doesn't sound like the same engine mine has?

I agree, I really like mine also, even in eco mode it is no slouch. Really miss it at the moment (two cars side swiped it on Saturday and is in the MB bodyshop). I've got a B180 as a hire car which is torture in comparison o_O

Sorry to hear about your car, hope it comes out the bodyshop OK.

Gringo66, same problem here. I've had my 2012 w212 e220d cabriolet for around three weeks and true to say it's the noisiest engine I think I have ever had in a car. I didn't notice the noise when I took a test drive though, I think I was caught up in the moment...
My last four cars have all been diesels, mainly due to the miles I do to and from and while I'm at work. Irrespective of the service record of how well the car has been maintained prior to my purchase, I always use Archoil Diesel Service Pack2 from a company called Powerenhancer. Yup, it does sound like dodgy fake Viagra sales site, but seriously they do supply some good stuff. I ordered the pack plus a Cetane booster and fuel lubricant that I add at every fill up.
Anyhoo, I'm getting side tracked. With the 2143 cc diesel sounding like Thomas The Bloody Tank Engine I added this Archoil AR9100 Advanced Friction Modifier & Oil Additive. I had the car running while adding it, so I could hear the difference. In short, it was nothing short of astounding. Engine noise a fraction of what it was and although far from perfect, it made a vast difference. The other parts of the service pack include a dpf and turbo cleaner and a fuel treatment and lubricant. As an extra, I have bought this stuff Archoil AR6850 Pure 2-Ethylhexyl Nitrate (2-Ehn) Cetane Number Improver (CNI) & Lubricant.
Fuel and oil additives are not everyone's cup of tea and for every good story you'll hear an equally bad one, but all I can say is that I have found that these additives really do make a difference and a big difference at that. I've used the same service pack on Lexus IS 220D, Jaguar XF 2.7 tdi, Audi 3.0 tdi Quattro and now in the E220D. All of these engines were noticeably quieter than they were previously, but the main thing about these additives, I've found, is that the cars, all of them just seem to behave better. I know that means nothing, but there is just something extra that makes them seem smoother when pulling away, obviously less noisy and there is also a very noticeable and visible decrease in smoke from the back end. I can saw in all honesty that no matter if they smoked a bit beforehand, after adding the fuel treatments and cleaners there is NO noticeable smoke. No smoke at all, at least that I can see, but I do wear Archoil tinted glasses!
I should say that I am a bog standard customer and have no connection with Powerenhancer or Archoil in any way. I just like their products and for me at least, they work. If anyone decides to give them a try I really hope you're not disappointed. I seriously doubt you will. My previous 3.0tdi Audi A5 had its last MOT on 09/09/2019 and the tester asked if I'd had any internal work done as the emissions were extremely low and what he would expect from a 2-3 year old vehicle. The Audi was first registered on 30th November 2008, this was far from a new car.

Well, I hope you found some of the above info useful. If anyone does decide to try any of the
additives mentioned, would you mind letting me know what you think? it would be interesting to see what others think of the stuff that I swear by.

Now, that's the engine cleanliness and emissions taken care of, now to set to work on trying to get more power from a unit that has the pulling power of me in a Night Club.

G'night lads and lassies.
Frankie
