.. or is it a little too Daily Express?

I'd love to get my car dyno'd on a reputable, reliable dyno with operators that have no interest in 'bigging up' any results.

I started a thread a few years back, but interest was limited, and so we didn't go ahead in the end.

I believe some of the 55 AMG owners are plotting something though.

I think most would consider this a "My willy's bigger then yours" day out......which is most likely why there is limited interest.

I think its a great idea, as I would like to have future mods exhaust, remap etc.. So would be a excellent (independent) way of getting the correct pre-upgrade results.

It is a bit of a marmite thing.

The ruler is in effect out for all to see, and so there may well be at least one or two who might want to show off.

However I've attended two RR days - I just watched on the first and ran my car on the second - and on both occasions there was no unhealthy competition.

I ran mine to see how close it was to published figures to make sure that their car was healthy, which I think was the motivation for most - whether modified or standard - rather than competing with other on how clever they were or how deep their pockets were.

One session had an award for the highest power, lowest power, etc but it was all fun, and everyone played nicely together which is what you'd expect from a forum such as this.

There were some standard cars, some mildly modified cars (+10-20% bhp), and a few heavily modifed cars (+50-75% bhp). One thing I did notice was many cars made less than the owner expected.

:) I own a CLK 200K.... I need someone who can big-up results :thumb:

We did a couple of RR days a few years ago, and I still use one of 3 dynos on a regular basis tuning the roller skates :)

I have run the SL on a dyno once - and that will do for the rest of its life, but the 190 is looking forward to a lot more dyno time once the blowers go on :D

FWIW I'm pretty sure I have done over 1000 runs with different cars over the years

If there was a RR day I'd want to get my car dyno'd just to see how much horsepower it's lost in it's 10 years of service!

See what interest you get. Surrey Rolling Road always gets positive feedback and would be my choice if I wanted to dyno my car.

I'd be interested for the same reasons as stated above - just to see if it's anywhere near what is claimed, after 100k miles.

A stopwatch would be a much better investment. On a flat road do five acceleration runs in one direction, five in the opposite and take an average.
You will easily be able to achieve better accuracy than 1/10th of a second.

If your mods don't achieve greater time differences that that they haven't been worth doing.

brilliant - who needs a £75,000 dyno when you can use a stop watch instead....

But he has a point!

If you cant spot the difference with a stopwatch then you wont really see a performance gain :D For what its worth a stopwatch or dragstrip is much more reliable that the infamous "butt dyno"!
I have lost count of the number of times I have made changes that supposedly felt better but in reality made no real world difference to power or performance.
We have reached a point where overlaying dyno torque curves is becoming essential to the tuning of the shopping trolley, and sometimes the differences are just a couple of lb/ft at a particular point in the curve.

I love dyno days, I like seeing the continual improvements in performance and I absolutely love live mapping on a dyno to eeek out the last drips of performance - but for the average person with no ability to remap, and limited mods the stopwatch idea is probably a pretty good shout!
