Hi Guys,

I was helping a friend trying to get a locking nut out of a wheel hub on his car and we've tried drilling it but with no avail.

I was thinking we should buy a very high quality drill bit that will penetrate it, since its some sort of very hard steel. We've managed to drill it all the way through until we got to drill bit size 7.5mm and now it will not budge. We almost killed the drill we had (big black&decker) as it started smoking! and the nut caught fire later on too lol! Its proving to be a real b*tch.

Could any of you suggest where i can get specialist tools as such? if not could you suggest an alternative method to get this nut out of the hub?

We had another suggestion along the lines of finding a drill piece that is of a cone shape (slightly), and it creates a thread in whatever you are drilling it through. Once you get it to the very end it should eventually start unscrewing the nut that you're trying to remove. Has anyone heard of something like this before? And if so, where do you think we'd be able to buy it?

I'd apreciate any help on this as we're quite stumped! This friend of ours had a drifting accident and it bent the arms holding the wheel, and it seems as if its bent this bolt too, since all the other bolts can come out except this one (which happens to be the damn locking nut!). And we cant move the car anywhere in this state either! :wallbash:
 
The only thing that springs to mind is tapping it with a left hand thread and winding a bolt into the hole to give you some purchase.

Physically how you would go about this I'm not sure.
 
you could try hss hire etc and ask them about magnetic drills and the bits that they use if you cant use the drill you might be able to adapt the bit
( the bit is more like a milling tool some people call them sluggers)

You are referring to an Easy Out (eazi out etc etc)

Read this as easy outs work great under perfect conditions - however quite often they ust break compounding the problem because you cant drill out an Easy out!

Pictures would be useful as I am struggling to comprehend if you have drilled the stud or the locking nut - I am assuming the stud as you have reached 7.5mm and at that point a locker would normally have given way.

If you have 7.5mm centrally in the bolt then just continue with bigger drills until the nut gives way. Once it is drilled to a decent size then a swift hit on the wheel with a large sledge will normally sort it (assuming alloy is scrap after the "incident" )


I have a large 24v battery Dewalt drill that has drilled every hole I have ever asked it to :)
 
i have drilled out many bolts, including many locking bolts. the mistake most people make is stepping up in small sizes, this just does not work as the bit cuts too hard at the sides and continually jams and gets blunt. the ideal way is to use only 2x or 3x sizes, i suggest start with about 3.5mm followed by 7.5mm (sounding good?;)) then 13+mm. this will see the head come off with the last cut, if it is prefectly central. the hardest part is keeping it central and sharpening the bits - even with my method the bits will usually need sharpening a couple or so times, especially the second and third sizes. sharpening drills is easy on a bench grinder with a little practice. other favourte bodges are welding on nuts and using specialist tools, but i guess you are saying this bolt is super tight?

Sledgehammer the wheel off, and then use some molegrips.
 
Usually a cold chisel and a club hammer do the job just fine. You should be able to split it in two if you have drilled most of the centre out.
 
Thanks for the reply guys appreciate the ideas.

Welding something to it sounds like an idea, will look into that.

When we were drilling the it, we were using oil at first, as a lubricant and then water to cool it down, it helped but we still got stuck later on when the drill bit size increased.

To clarify, we are drilling a locking nut, which seems to look as if its some sort of shiny stainless still at the head, and the rest of the bolt just looks like a normal bolt (cast iron?).

But apart from HSS, there's no others?

I have just got the box out of my tool box and there is no part number on it. cant seem to find it on the website either.
