I went to a security update today, and looked at emerging threats.

One is password cracking tools have improved greatly thanks to improved CPU performance and a cracking botnet.

For example, probably this - BBC News - Thousands hit in Tesco.com attack

Upshot is make sure you important passwords are hard to crack, ie a
mix of upper & lower case, numbers and special characters. At least 10 chars, preferably 12 to 15.

Don't use the same password for more than 1 account if there is money involved.

Mine is "incorrect". That way if I enter the wrong password the site tells me " your password is incorrect"
 
Apparently, according to a recent BBC news report - the two most commonly used passwords are

persons first name followed by the number 1

the word password followed by the number 1

Great imagination, some people.
 
I had the same problem when I used to fit burglar alarms. Most customers wanted either 0000 or 1234 for their code. Lord help them if they ever lose their cashpoint cards…...
