I have just aquired a set of the chrome insert door handles. But how do you get the old lock barrels out and my ones in?

I think Ian wrote a "how to" on changing lock barrels but here's a quick summary

put a key in the lock with the door open

on the side of the door you will see some rubber caps - remove the smaller top one and insert a small allen key (I think from memory it's 4mm) and undo the bolt - no need to take it all the way out.

Then you can turn the key about half a turn and pull the lock barrel out.

To refit handles you'll need to use the hole covered by the large rubber plug to reconnect the linkages properly

Thats great Andy for removal of exsisting lock ,problem is I dont have the keys for the lock on the replacememt handle Ive got the pin out but can't retract the lock barrel, could I just drill it out? :o or would this ruin the aperture which i want to reuse using my exsisting locks. Thanks in advance Alex.

on the 124 the lock shouldn't be attached to the handle - it's a seperate part which comprises of the lock and the plastic surround which, reading between the lines, I guess is the part you are trying to use with your old lock mechanism to get the chrome surround.

I don't think there is an easy way, that plastic plate is moulded on. You can't get the insert out without the key as you need to have the tumblers retracted so drilling may be the only way. Putting the current lock mechanism into your new handles won't be easy either as the tumblers have to line up exactly and getting that retaining pin back in is a real nightmare.

Drilling is also dangerous as you may damage the lock barrel housing - make sure any drill you use is very sharp and slow turning. If possible get it on a bench drill so you can accurately control just how deep you go in and at what angle.

If the worst comes to the worst you can ask your dealer to get you a new lock mechanism for the doors and tell them that you want the ones with the chrome inserts. MB will supply either for the W124.

Sorry I can't be more help

Andy

I suppose i could contact the guy I got them from for a loan of the spare key.I just wanted them on as Ive already fitted the rears. Thanks anyway Andy, your a star.
