Just interested to see if the membership have any thoughts as to whether the dremel range is worth the (fairly significant) premium over generic multi-tools, like the Clarke ones etc. wanting to do some very minor sanding/rubbing down of areas showing some rust/stone chipping in order to treat before they take hold.

I've not tried any generic ones, but have been very impressed with the robustness and flexibility of my Dremel unit, although the discs and brushes are nothing special. I bought the 300 with accessories: this kit is no longer available but plenty of alternatives kits are.

The Dremel is serious kit and far more solid than any generic, but as said above, the little wire brushes are rubbish. The sanding drums are more useful.

If you need to use a rotary brush then you need one on a mains power drill or an angle grinder. Failing that it's by hand.

I have a generic one thats been going for five years or so and I abuse it quite regularly.

If its only a minor job then why spend big money.

+1 if you only intend light use.

Thank you for the advice. As I think it will see little use (just want to touch up stone chips on the lip of the wheelarches on the g) I will go generic from machine mart or someone. Very grateful to you all for the advice.

I love my Dremel! It's been a great bit of kit. I've used it to fare perspex panels, grind steel and aluminium, as a drill and to polish bits and pieces.

Not sure you want a dremel for that purpose - you just need some wet and dry sandpaper.

The Dremel/generic has 101 uses but wire brushing is not one of them.

I wish it was because I have both generic and Dremel.

If you are doing wheel arches the suggest small wire disc on the mains drill (cordless don't seem to have enough power or speed)

If you have just little stone chips then suggest a scratch-pen for precise bushing before dotting paint into the hole.
