Driving In France

This is the country where its routine to drink wine with lunch in the motorway service areas, as well as during any routine lunch with colleagues....

I found this more the case when working in the North of France because of the local cider. I have sat with 3 French colleagues and see 2 bottle of wine 2 big (wine sized) bottles of Cidre and a few beers sank before going back into the factory to deal with moving machinery. I like a drink so it's fine by me , but I have mates who would be a danger to themselves if they drank that much at lunchtime :)

As an aside it's one of the reasons I turn down work in France (just one of the reasons...) staring work at 08:30 deducting an hour for lunch and finishing at 17:00 and no weekend work is just not viable on a self employed hourly rate (no matter how high it is) when I can go elsewhere . I am not on holiday when I go overseas to work.

I have worked a fair bit in France and been there on numerous holidays and motorbike trips . Never stopped by the police ...luckily.

And in France no type of device that can detect/block radar or even tell you where fixed speed cameras are , if you have one that sticks to the windscreen remove it and put it in the boot . If it is on your phone or built into your car ? No Idea .
I believe that those built into cars don't show camera locations in countries where it's prohibited.

Not forgetting that you have to carry snow chains on certain roads as well at defined parts of the year, even if there is no snow (and even if you have winter tyres)...

Have experience of that in the Haute-Savoie, had an Audi A5Q at the time and had snow chains with me, police were stopping anyone without them even attempting leaving the village we were staying in during a heavy snowstorm. Luckily i'd already put them on the front of the car before approaching the road block (even though the car was capable enough of ascending the hill they were at the bottom of, without the chains).

They send them to you from Germany
Why do you think so?

The UK doesn't share car ownership data after Brexit.

For a fine to be issued to you, the issuer has to send a request for the details to the UK DVLA, receive back the address, and then send the fine to you many months later.

My impression is that the process isn't being followed, so fines aren't being issued.

That might be the case , not sure, but quite how it would work with (or without) regular software updates to the car , and many are fitted with aftermarket/modified headunits. I really have no idea how they would police it fairly.

I have the Bip&Go app on my iPhone and find it very useful for route panning as it gives approximate fuel cost which you set for the type of vehicle and the exact toll fee for the route. You can use the app without subscribing to Bip &Go.

Bip&Go offer toll tag services for France Italy and Spain. They charge 10€ to post the tag to the UK plus a one off 10€ activation fee. A monthly fee is payable along with the toll costs. The monthly fee varies from 1.70 - 2.50€ depending upon which country you use the tag in.

(They can't even post ANPR speeding fines to the UK - for different reasons)

.
May just be an empty threat, but there would appear to be reasons where offences trapped by ANPR can chase you around.

The DfT told Driving.co.uk that British drivers may not be off the hook even if they’re not fined at the roadside in the EU, because the 1959 Council of Europe Convention on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters (MLA), which permits the exchange of information and evidence on criminal and administrative matters, will continue to apply to the UK.

A spokesperson told us: “Speeding is irresponsible and puts people’s lives at risk and although the UK is no longer required to share the same level of information with the EU on road users, drivers of UK registered vehicles may still be contacted in relation to these offences.”

Agreed, see the second part of my original comment.

Austria sent me one back in 1978. I haven't paid it yet.
Switzerland sent me one in 1998, followed by several reminders and threats of prosecution should I ever enter Switzerland again.
They are still waiting for payment.
I have been back many times since.

I got mine from Ulys. Same thing, different supplier. Brilliant bit of kit.
Thanks for the recommendation. We go to France every year and have always stopped to take ticket and then pay with card. Hardly a great hardship, but I used to have a TAG for the Severn crossing and it was so much less hassle.

So, I just did a search for Ulys and have signed up with a promo code for 12 months free subscription and free delivery, so no additional cost at all for this year.

Much appreciated.

Got a speeding citation from Australia years ago , arrived in a letter to my home in the UK . I had been to Australia a few times but the dates were all wrong.

Turned out my mate who lives out there remembered (or had in his memory for just such an occasion) my full name , birthdate and UK address when pulled over by the local plod !

Cheeky sod . Nothing came of it.

Have had a few speeding/toll charges finally find me from Denmark , the Netherlands, Belgium and Canada . But thats because they were hire cars . Can take months to arrive and the car hire company often charge a 'handling fee' .

Currently waiting for toll charges after driving over the Golden gate bridge a few weeks ago , Avis said the may or may not turn up ...but it could take months and they will simply hit my credit card for them .

It was before Brexit 👍

I got a fine through the post for speeding when I was in Holland December 2019.

Paid it, wasn’t a significant amount, didn’t want any aggro, as I was going to travel through there in 2021.
