Driving In France

The old "You Must Have Spare Glasses To Drive In France" story is totally false (even though it still does the rounds, apparently).

The rule is simple: If you need glasses to drive, then you must wear them when driving. End of.

Same as alcohol testing kits, not actually law but if you were stopped would you have enough language skills to argue with an awkward French copper so we just take them.

It certainly wasn't a requirement in France, however, it was in Spain, which might be where the confusion arose.

Of course, it makes sense and I recall a friend losing his specs. whilst on board a boat, lost overboard never to be seen again. Not ideal if you need them for a 700-mile drive home.

When I get new glasses the previous pair goes into one of our vehicles as an emergency spare (and older ones in there get binned). Prescription sunglasses live in the vehicles to start with as that's where I normally need them. Nothing to do with legal requirements - just want to make sure I don't get stranded somewhere!

Does anyone know a Brit being fined or even just hassled in France over prescription glasses in a car ?

They don't even stop me for speeding. (Although I would absolutely never, ever, ignore a speed limit)

I broke a pair of glasses in Germany when I went to meet my in-laws for the first time - unfortunately we'd flown over, so I was blind as a bat until we could get to an optician and have them fixed :D

My best one though was running a pair of glasses over with my tractor - I was dumping soil on a bank, a small branch flicked back and knocked my glasses off, and the slope was too much for the parking brake. So I had to let it roll back before getting off to look for them - by then they were under a rear tyre  :fail:

Yes indeed. Apologies for the incorrect information in my earlier post. That is Spain, not France.
