Mercedes E Class Sport Coupe - now sold
Found this on a German Mercedes Forum. The guy just collected his brand new Mercedes E Class Coupe only to find that they have fitted the wing mirrors from the Saloon on the Coupe:wallbash:

...and it has 4 doors...

:D

Would not be at all surprised, thought quality control was improving with the new models:)

Its quite worrying this could happen if its genuine, poor show Mercedes.

They are not wing mirrors :p

On a more serious note, why would the door mirrors be different on a coupé and a saloon given the need to cut costs by using common parts ?

They don't use common parts, saloon and coupe are different. Wing / door mirrors can be different for all sorts of reasons on coupe to saloon, one could be because BMW always have different mirrors so marketing deem it necessary, others could be the frameless doors that dictate a different mass to stop it resonating unnecessarily. Blind spot/ different geometry of the car and a mirror has to be able to see a certain viewing area. The list goes on.

What they should have in place is some sort of error proofing so they don't fit or this mistake can't be made again, from a different bolt pattern to a check on the buy off area.

so saloons and coupes come off the same production line then? I find that a little strange

Sorry, door mirrors. The Coupe ones should be more angular like the following, unless it is a cost cutting thing and they are using the same parts on 2010 models:eek:

John Deer: I don't know about that, you would think that a lot of the trim items are common, dash, running gear etc. so one would assume a common production line but i'm not sure how merc do it.

Yeah, now that I've looked at both saloon and coupé pictures there's a heck of a lot of differences from grille backwards!

Coupe's usually share very few exterior styling parts with saloons for most manufactureres now, BMW wrote the book on this and others followed.

A little digging shows that the salon is made in Sindelfingen yet the coupes are made in Bremen

Quite a strange error to make, could even have been the dealers fault if say the mirrors got damaged some how and they replaced them by mistake with saloon items.

(I have seen bigger fudge ups by dealers !)

This reminds me, a little tenuously, of my favourite mixed-up parts story, which came from Murray Walker.

When he ran the Vauxhall advertising campaign in the 60's he went to visit a Vauxhall service centre, and was shown an example of the QA problems they were having. He was shown a Victor which had drum brakes on one side, and yes, you guessed it - discs on the other!!!

Lol
One of my colleagues went to visit a dealer in the mid 80ies, he was looking at one of our products from the drivers seat and the dealer said can you tell whats wrong, he looked round and couldn't see anything a miss until he got out and the seat he was sat in was grey where the others were black!
No problem though he was sent a new seat and all was well, however the seats came in pairs and we never received the other car back with lone grey passenger seat! so someone must have liked it and kept it!

Have a feeling that it's not a mistake. Been informed by some friends in Germany that they are fitting the saloon ones on the new convertible to reduce wind noise and may do the same on the coupe to reduce cost. Really hope this not the case as they do not suit the Coupe at all:(

Will post a video link for the release of the new convertible which shows the square ones fitted

I think the saloon wing mirrors work better and integrate better with the angular shape
