Hi,

Advice needed. I have a P 96 E240. The alarm is giving me problems. One keyfob refuses to work completely, the second works intermittently leaving me locked out of the car occasionally. I have tried changimg the batteries, but no joy.

Does any one know what the cause could be? Any ideas how much this would cost to fix?

I had a similar problem in a previous car whcih had a clifford alarm. That turned out to be a reciever fault. But I understand it MB alarm use infrared, are these known to have problems?

Any help appreciated.

I had the same problems on a previous E Class, and it was the Batteries in the remote.
Are the batteries you fitted NEW? I would go to the dealer and talk to them and if necessary buy a new set of batteries to check it is not that.

The other thing that happens with those remotes is the button on them fails. They are only good for something like 30,000 presses or something silly.

MB know about it and on the occasions we had to call out Service 24 ( what mobilo used to be called ) the chap took our key , cut it up and left us with the metal key itself with a cable tie on the end to turn itin the ignition and a pcb with insulating tape round it to hold the batteries onto the alarm pcb. This exposed the button thats surface mounted onto the pcb thus worked.

The keys are about £60 and your dealer can supply a new one for you. We had 3 or 4 go dead in the 5 years and 95k we had the car.

One of my key fobs has failed. Have tried new batteries to no avail. I never use the buttons as I have KeylessGo. I now have a list of 9 electronic / electrical failures to be sorted since they last rectified 7 faults 3 months ago. Thankfully car is still under warrantee.

The Electronics and Electrical systems on my car are hopelessly flakey and cannot be relied upon. I only do about 5000 mile a year!

On getting into the car 1st thing today as I opened the door the car decided to give me a red warning the door was open. I then drove off and it gave me another warning that the hand brake was on, which it wasn't. The steering wheel doesn't drop into it's memory position about 1/3 of the time. I have to reprogram the seats and mirrors at least once a fortnight. Sometimes as I unlock the car and get in, the alarm goes off.

The funniest is when the Comand issues a twin instruction to 'Make a U Turn, then Make a U turn'. It also switches off without warning.

Thaks for all the info guys. I think the problem is with the keyfobs. I trie the spare card/key, and tat works everytime. Wil be goingdown to benz later this week to get new key fobs made.

Ralph - If you have problems with your car, get them sorted before the warranty expires. I had issues with my VW, and now it costs a fortune to get anything done as the car is out of warranty.

Since you say your car is a 1996 model I will take it that it is the one button flip style key correct ?
