Hi

I have the chance to have my father in laws E200 (1997) for free, the only problem is that the car will only work in 1st gear an reverse, he has taken it to a local garage but he says it needs to go to a merc dealer.
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? I like the idea of a free Merc :) but not if its going to cost £££££ to fix

Cheers

Best thing to do is get it a Merc Indy and have auto transmission fluid level checked and fault codes read. This won't cost very much - maybe even free ?

It sounds as if its in 'Limp Mode' which mean there is a fault somewhere that is stopping the car from driving properly. This could be anything from a £20 fix to a £2000 fix, you will need to take it to a specialist or a dealer to get the fault codes read.

Cheers for the advise.
I have just spoken with the mechanic that has got it.
He says the selector unit is knackered an needs a new one.
Apparently they bout £500 an can only be bought from mercedes then it has to be calibrated with the greabox ECU costing about another £200 and u cant fit one from another car cause it wont calibrate.

Anyone know if this is right?

Cheers again

Mav
