E200
Hi. Ive recently bought a W210 E200 petrol. Someone told me I can have it tuned to be more fuel efficient. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't bother, the gains would be negligible.

Complete waste of time.

I thought as much. Thanks for the confirmation. I enjoy the car regardless, just thought I'd query it on the off chance.

What do you get out of it?

I know the c2003 520i is hopeless on fuel economy - you may as well have bought a 530i for the difference in the real world...

It's not terrible to be honest. The stats claim 31 mpg (combined) which is about right. I usually work on miles per £10 instead of mpg. I get between 40 and 52 miles to £10 depending on driving conditions. My wife wants a second generation C class so I may invest in a C220 cdi for her and I'm considering swapping the E200 for a W210 E220 cdi and having the engine re-mapped to boost the power whilst retaining a little more fuel economy. Would you recommend any of these vehicles. I'm new to Mercedes Benze so a little in the dark I'm afraid...but I have to say I'm loving the E class. It feels great and drives lovely for an old wagon! Thanks.

That's not too bad.

I don't have any personal experience of either the C220CDI or W210 E220CDI to be able to recommend them myself. Mine is the first MB I've owned - but it is a great car.

I would consider doing the maths though. Depending on your mileage per year and type of driving you do, you should consider if the cost to change vehicles (what you lose on yours, the potential extra premium of buying a diesel vehicle over the equivalent petrol, the fact that diesel is more expensive etc.) versus the extra cost of the additional fuel you use in yours over a more economical diesel (and how much more economical in the real world are the diesels of the era you are looking), makes financial sense...

That's good advice. I'll do some calculations and and make a decision. My wife needs a new car anyway so the C220 cdi may be a good investment alone! Thanks.

My logic only really applies if the only reason for change is to save money from better fuel economy. These other factors can be overlooked sometimes.

A change of car 'anyway' yields an opportunity to buy a more frugal car to suit your requirements - so it would make sense to do that.

I'd post a new post about the car you intend to buy, or at least use the Advanced Search to look for C220 just to find out what gotchas there are - it may throw up valuable gotchas to look out for - which could of course wipe out any savings gained from buying a diesel per se in repair bills (nothing is immune mind). You really want a plate range to be focussing on to avoid troubles!
