E220 Cabriolet - 2012
Hi, I am a new member and have been tirelessly searching for an answer to my problem. I own a 2012 E220 cabriolet with a highly spec'd package from factory. I had some work done during and after a service with Mercedes WSM and had the roof down on the way there with the air cap deployed (as I always do). When receiving the car back, a few days later, the air cap was inoperative but the rear deflector and head rests deployed as normal. I have no light illuminating on the button either. I have searched for fuse box diagrams but can find no mention of the air cap or rear headrests fuses or relays. Can someone please help with this. I understand this is an old fault on these forums, but I would really like to solve it with your help. Thank you in advance.

Firstly could what the garage has done caused this issue?
My first thought would be take it back and ask them to fix it as it was working before they had it..

Hi whitenemesis,

thanks for your reply, I did take it back a week after they had carried out the work and after a little verbal tussling they agreed to look at it quickly with Xentry while I waited. When they returned I was told that they couldn't even get it to actuate, and I would have to book it in for diagnostics at £186 per hour to search for the issue. I would not accept this as it stopped working whilst with them. I read on other forums that a service update removed the aircap coding and then had to be reinstated afterwards. Not sure how true this is but that is the only reasonable explanation I could find for the sudden loss of function. It was quite a while ago now and I no longer visit this dealer because of it. I would love to sort this problem out if I can.

Thanks.

I'd suggest contacting this well respected MB specialist

Is it the fact the windscreen spoiler has stopped working ?
I have read somewhere that the motor linkage can seize up,
Or do you think a speed sensor has failed, can you lower the roof at speeds above 25 mph ?

Hi Geoffus, thanks for the response. Yes the spoiler has stopped working, and doesn't sound like its even trying (no clicking or motor straining sounds coming from it when the button is pressed). This makes me think that it could be a simple fuse or relay fault or been dropped from the activated control module list, as it was definitely working the day I took it to the stealers. I always use it when the roof is down and this trip, on my way to them, was no exception (33 mile journey from my home). It does make a big difference in the front as well as the rear seats.
I've never tried dropping the roof at any speed above 5 to 10 mph, as I've never really needed to. When the button is pressed no lights illuminate on it, as they did before, but the rear headrests and deflector extend, as they do when I have a rear passenger, and then retract when closing the roof. I can't find any references to fuses or relays, relating to the air cap specifically, in any of the fuse box diagrams that I have found, and I've found a lot. Im guessing the system is part of the comfort control but that doesn't really help either as there are no issues/codes showing up with any of the control modules when I interrogate with my Delphi 150 scanner. Still scratching my head with this one. I am a multi skilled engineer and really don't like things not working properly or at all.

Thanks for your suggestions with this. Maybe I will try to operate the roof at speeds above 25mph and see what happens. Will let you know.

Mine is speed sensitive and doesn't rise till about 25mph or so.

Mine is a 2012 model and always worked when stationary, I did activate it by pressing the button today but was on local roads so only reached 30 mph for very short time and nothing changed, will try when on a faster road along with the above suggestion to check speed sensor is functioning correctly.

Thanks, anything is worth a try.

Have a look here, especially the last post:

2012 E350 CDi Convertible. Air cap will not close. Goes down but then comes back up. 2 red lights on switch. Is there a way of manually closing it or putting it down and then not using it?

Hi. I have a 2013 E250 and I'm experiencing the same issue.

The windscreen deflector stays in the open position. Strangely it goes all the way down and immediately back up when I lock/unlock the doors or start/stop the engine.

The light also stays on. I don't believe it's a mechanical issue as theres no obstructions and it literally goes all the way down for a good second before it goes back up. Tried lubricating all the hinges and everything looks super clean/obstruction free.

Has anybody else experienced the same and found a resolution? I would rather disconnect it somehow than to replace the entire unit.

Hi MV55, This has just happened to me, after a air bag recall and the dealer did a health test and ecu and other updates. its not showing any faults but it does not work since. What was your outcome on this ?

He not been seen on this forum since 20 Oct 2022....a mere 17 days after he joined......so I'm guessing he won't be replying any time soon! Hopefully someone else might be able to help.

Had same issue with mine, Aircap not moving and no light in button. The problem was that during an earlier Software update of the car, they forgot to "tell the system" that the car was equippped with Aircap, witch is optional. Hence the function was disconnected.

A new SW update at MB was the fix, works fine now :)
