I have a M plate E220 that has over the last two days had a intermitent starting problem. This morning wont start at all, it appears their is no spark to the plugs. i am leed to belive that there are two coils. hard to believe that they have both gone down. Any ideas!!!

Most common thing is your distributor cap and rotor and maybe even plug leads- test/clean or replace.

If that doesnt sort it, does the car have an alarm/imobiliser?

No distributor cap on this madel. and surely not every lead could go down over 3 days.

Anyone advise on location of flywheel sensor and coils!

ovp relay

The two coils are located below the inlet manifold OR under the engine cover on later models. They are DIRECTLY triggered by signals from the ECU. The crankshaft position sensor is located at the nearside rear of the cylinder block above the starter motor (dont confuse it with the anti knock sensor which is slightly further forward). My guess, and its only a guess SINCE ALL IGNITION IS MISSING is the OVP relay or relay fuse is gone. Its behind the plastic shield covering the ABS control unit and engine ECU BEHIND THE BATTERY. Its a long silver rectangular unit in mine closer to the nearside of the engine ECU. Could also be the ECU itself or coils or associated wiring loom, but a coil fault would NORMALLY only affect 2 plugs at a time

Failing Grobers excellent advice. Behind the rear inlet manifold support strut is a wire that splits into two. If this is split or has started to degrade then you will have problems starting your car.

diagnostic check

Thanks everyone will check that cable tomorrow. Friend Knows a AA man who will do a diagnostic check for a drink, hopefuly that will narrow it down. GSF car parts can't get the flywheel sensor, £95! from MB.
