How well powered is a 220CDi E-class? I know the 270 is optimum, but would the 220 be terrible? From what I can see it is not THAT much heavier than the C class

Also, was there a facelift E class around or after that time? How can I tell the difference?

As always, thanks

I find it perfectly adequate - I'm not into launching from the lights, and it hauls 5 adults or a bunch of guitars and loads of rack gear with no problems.

Also gives 50 mpg at 80 mph on the regular blat down to France.

Not bad at all!

I had a 2005 E220 CDI Estate for 20,000 miles in 2006. It is a fine car and as long as you don't expect a rocket its really quite quick enough. You will like the fuel consumption and the internal refinement is Ok.
Why did I change? It does sound a bit like a taxi from the outside but as a cost effective executive car it would take some beating.:D

The range was revamped around 2005 and the E270CDI was replaced by the E280CDI and the E240 was dropped.

Then there was the summer 2006 facelift version. Apart from the changes across the whole line the E220 appears to have been substantially pepped up compared with the pre-facelift model.

I did 35k in one and it was enough to make me buy a bmw!

Plus there have been numerous alterations which really commenced mid summer of 2004.

The important thing regarding the vehicle your looking at is the fact it should have the nano paint technology. This was introduced officially on the E-class in January 2004.

In my personal opinion the Avantgarde is the one to go for. (more standard fittings)

Good luck with the decision,

Regards
John

however , saying that i think there was something wrong with mine as no matter how hard i tried , i couldnt get it to go over 36mpg. So , something must have been bust on it somewhere allong the line. Was in at the dealers quite a few times trying to solve the issue and in the end they just said its fine and there isnt anything they can do about it . I turned that around and thought i could do something about it and sold the bugger. :) Its alright and thats pretty much as good as your getting from me.

Having had the W210 220cdi , i prefered that one to the w211 to be honest

Servicing was also a bugbear , my car is in often enough to really take an interest in costings , and it was going in every 9k with assyst. So bugger that TBH , my bmw's only see the dealer every 20k and its a LOT cheaper than MB servicing ill tell you!

I was looking for a 220 when I bought the 270. To be honest for everyday use the 220 is fine, but the 270 will powerslide...

... back in the real world, facelift models have the flourescent climate display and the fabric grille instead of the plastic slats on the dash, also there's a flat badge on the radiator grille as well as the gunsight on the bonnet. And another 20 or so bhp, so they probably will powerslide.

I'll think positive - will save me a bundle on tyres!

Thanks Tim

don't do it , go for at least a 270 , trust me on this one ! :)

I agree with you, but not sure budget will stretch! Sometimes, I hate being sensible!!!

The solution? Get a 220 and fit a diesel tuner module to bring it to the same level that Mercedes have now done with the facelift car from 2006. I did, had no problems, got fantastic fuel consumption and the power of a 270.:D

Food for thought indeed!! 2 questions - the car would come with 1 year MB Tier 1 warranty and I would want to buy another year whan that was up. How would it affect warranty?

And - ball park cost?

erm , the car then becomes modified and im sure that invalidates the warranty. As if you hold out for the 270 your gonna get 177bhp instead of the 150 or so that the 220 of that era has.

Its one of those things , if you have to buy a car now and can only afford the 220 then cool , but if you can wait a bit till maybe the prices soften or the budget can go up then i would strongly advise on the 270 from both the extra performance and economy from that 5cyl is unbelieveable. I was reguarly getting 54 easilly on the motorway and 60 if i eased back to 60mph ish with the C270.

Warranty is something you would have to ask the suppliers about. Cost is between £200 (a basic dieseltuner.co.uk module) to about £500 for a 'Superchips' re-map. Superchips offer a warranty to supplement the manufacturer one if it is deemed that their work has caused a problem with the car. I have used both and have been very happy.

i have a saying ...when you buy ,buy what you want ,don't settle for second best as it will never do .... if you want a 270 ...(i would go for the 320 cdi )then bloody well get one ..... .... but then again i am more than happy with my E300 bags of power when needed ... and very frugel as well,

When I picked mine I could have had a 220, 270 or 320 for the same price, difference being 40,000, 50,000 or 60,000 miles.

270 comes with big fuel tank....
