i have an 1999 E220cdi and so far it hasnt caused me any bothersome prob, sure theres a spot of rust here and there - but its not really bothered me too much, i didnt buy the car new.

anyway heres what i need advice on!

lately iv noticed a noise being emitted from the car, iv opend the bonnet and can hear it from behind the main fan / radiator unit.

i notice it after parking my car, it sounds like a mechanical whirring and sometimes like a jet engine taking off. (this is all happening after ive switched the engine OFF!) the noise continues for about 3-4 mins and then slowly subsides.

i really dont know what it could be and am worried if its going to be something costly to repair?

does anybody know what it can be? and what it would cost to put right?!

all advice much appreciated !!!

open your ash tray and there is a little switch with a symbol on it and off , when off the red light should illiminate.

try the car with this switched off and see if it makes a diference.

Its the aux heater , it will kick in when the weather is colder to heat the inside of the car up faster , should be an almost parafin type smell too when its on :)

The aux heater is designed to aid the heating up of the engine coolant. The heater should switch off when the coolant reaches approx 70C. If the heater is still running after a long run, check the engine temp gauge has reached 80C (normal operating temp) We had a C220CDI in last week with the aux heater running all the time, turns out the engine was only getting to 60C. We fitted a new thermostat. Bingo car reaches 80C and heater no longer runs after engine switched off (after a good run).

Thus heating up the inside of the car faster :)

I once had a 1982 Audi 80. The electric cooling fan was 'ex-electrics', ie it would run with the ignition off.
This feature stopped loss of coolant AFTER the engine was turned off as it would continue to cool the radiator.
Are current MB like this ?

Same as a 1973 Fiat 127 I had in the mid '80s except that the fan never worked and the engine kept overheating  Caused fuel vaporisation and therefore wouldn't start when hot but I had a car full of girls who were always willing to give a good old push so we could get back to school after lunch :D
