E240 W211 instrument cluster woes

My mate has a E270 W211 diesel and has had no end of trouble with the dashboard.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

He bought an instrument cluster from eBay (reasons for swapping it below) but it gives 2 issues;
1) The cruise control illumination for the selected speed doesn't light up.
2) The fuel gauge won't go below a quarter and the light doesn't come on. He ran out of fuel at the weekend!!

The original instrument cluster he had was part number A 211 540 57 48
The eBay one is part number is A 211 540 37 11

(the reason he changed is was that there was a lot of illumination not working on the instrument cluster. He sent this to a specialist who told him that nothing was wrong. He subsequently bought the one from eBay above and now has another 2 but different problems!).

If he puts the old one (original one) back in what happends?

The original fault (lack of illumination on the dials) returns. This was checked out as 'ok' by an independent specialist.

I would imagine it just needs coding properly for the options/settings of the car.

Did he just swop it over (ignoring mileage etc), or was it done properly by someone with Star Diagnosis.

Yep he just swapped it. The mileage thing was expected.
I thought maybe the fuel gauge needed calibrated but as I have no idea how it works in that car I'd be stabbing in the dark

You think a STAR could sort it?

Yes. It just needs coding so it knows it has the correct engine
