Newbie here, and I know you're all going to shout MAF, but just wanted to be precise about the symptons in case anything else springs to mind. My local indy garage thinks it might be but is not sure.

The symptoms are:
- Revs restricted to exactly 2,600 rpm max, lardy power too
- Resets to normal after turning ignition on and off momentarily
- Engine light in cluster remains on
- Occurs around 5-10 miles into a journey until switch off
- Temperature guage reduces slightly (a bar or two) after the fault occurs
- Erratic revs occassionally on half throttle (1.4-1.5k revs)
- Quite a bit of soot if revved hard when able to

If it is the MAF, is it a part I can repair myself? The nuts look to have odd patterns on them. My MAF appears to have A004 153 32 28 on it but can't find one on the Bosch site.

Any help much appreciated.

Hello and welcome, what you can do is to unplug the MAF and note the changes as to how the car goes, if the find that the engine is almost back to normal, well then you have the answer.

What happens is when the MAF goes down, other components like the O2 sensor deviate from their stored settings, and this turns the lamp on.

the MAF is often held in the housing with security torx screws, when you buy a new one they do come complete with the housing.

That part number that you have is the MB number, All Bosch service centers keep them. You could ask GSF or Euro, but do make sure it is a Bosch

Thanks... will give it a go in the morning and then get onto Europarts.

My E270 is due in at the local Bosch Service Centre on Friday. Looking more closely at the whole area around the MAF I noticed a worrying amount of oil(?) on the piping below that MAF assembly. Here are two photos, one of the general area and a close up too. Is this normal? Does it also point to a MAF problem? Or to something else?

All advice much appreciated.

Black can answer better than me on this, but to me it looks like the camshaft sensor oil leak

That oil is from a faulty/worn 'breather oil trap' situated at the top of the engine next to the air filter box which is allowing engine oil to pass the diaphragm inside........a new one is approx £15 and dead simple for you to renew yourself.

Here is a picture of it...........

I think I've got a different version of the assembly to the one in your picture, assuming I've located the right thing! I trust it's the round thing in the middle. I've taken a photo of it:

It looks like a part metal/part plastic part. Do you know if I have to replace the whole thing? Would seem logical to replace this first before seeing if the MAF is at fault.

Yes, it looks to be a bit different to the photo i posted but it does the same job....the breather oil trap comes as a complete unit........The problem with it begins when the diaphragm inside the trap becomes hard and brittle through age and heat and allows oil from the engine to pass into the breather pipes.

After renewing the trap it might be worth to try cleaning the maf first before buying a new one........if you do a search on the forum you will find info on how to do this.
