I've recently bought a 1996 E280 automatic, and I'm very pleased with it.

The only nagging annoyance is the lack of lights behind the fan/heater controls on the dashboard.

I read somewhere that bulb(s) could be accessed by pulling off the fan and heater dials. I've removed the controls but there's no sign of a bulb. Could it be a fuse? All the other dashboard lights are fine.

Malcolm,

Thanks so much for the swift response, much appreciated.

Why is it always the left hand bulb that goes. Both my C-Class's, brothers CLK and now my Dad's W210 :(

Could it be that those that sit on the left are knob twiddlers :o

If you take out the right bulb, the good one will be left.:D

Here is a thread started by 'Bigwood' that is discussing 'knob twiddlers'.

I like a double entendre as much as the next man but....

....oops forgot, I am grown up now!

Be careful removing the bulb as with tweezers they are easy to shatter.

When I removed mine on my old C class I used a bit of clear tubing. I put this over the bulbs and pulled them out luckily they didnt break.
