Just picked up a 1996 W124 E300 D last night, drove it back to Birmingham from Surrey ( 180 miles the longway around the M25).

First diesel W124 I have owned. Drove like a dream all the way. Had a smile on my face all the way up.

I have been offered a set of AMG 17" for the car and wanted to know if that would be a good idea. Would welcome and comments or suggestions.

Would also welcome any suggestions on what I need to look for or do to keep the E300 D nice and healthy.

Regards

Just the usual really. There is a pre fuel filter just before the main fuel filter which probably has not been changed in a while. I'm sure IBW will be along soon to give you any hints and tips.
BTW I had a bid pulled on a 300D 24V 124 Estate cancelled because it was sold. That was down south too. Anything to do with you?? Looks like a great buy if you got that one.
If it was or not good luck with it.

I did get it via ebay and the seller did cancle a bid but I am not sure of the reason why. Was it a siliver on with a damaged rear bumper?

  • rusty wings
  • rust under rear window
  • rust on jacking points
  • rusty underneath
  • bushes
  • serp idler
  • wheel bearings
all of which are or course age related and mitigated by careful ownership.

unfortunately for you I believe yours is late enough to have all that electronics jiggery pokery under the hood.

That is not the one I was on. One day my dream will come.
Good Luck with it.

Add to that list:
  • engine mounts
  • front prop doughnut
  • front arb bushes
  • serpentine belt damper
  • rear subframe leading mounts
  • inoperative inlet manifold vacuum system
  • flaring gearshifts
  • worn interior
